Athens accommodation recommendations

We’re going to Greece this summer with our DC aged 9 and 10, spending a week on Hydra and a couple of nights in Athens either side. Have left it very late to book Athens accommodation (this holiday has been rolled over from 2020 so I was waiting to see if it would actually go ahead!) and wondered if anyone had any recommendations of cheap and cheerful accommodation for our two nights at the beginning and end (even if it’s just which area to stay in) as well as suggestions of how to spend our time there. We will be going from the airport to the port (and back) with luggage so ideally not too far from the right metro lines. Thanks in advance!

We did that a few years ago with our two DC. We just rented an Airbnb apartment within walking distance of the Acropolis and its museum (both of which were great). You can also walk from there to Monastiraki (the area behind the Acropolis), which has the Agora (ancient Greek market place), Greek temple, Roman amphitheatre, plus plenty of good restaurants. We covered all of it in two days and really enjoyed ourselves.
