Random but anyone have any suggestions where to go? DS (9) and I have an opportunity for a long weekend away together and he fancies Holland despite not knowing anything about the country 🤷‍♀️ it's just for fun so we could go anywhere.

Arnhem is a lovely town with a world renowned open air museum, well worth a trip on the train if you have time

Lovely area- for the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum. The nearby zoo is excellent too.

Lived there for years. Efteling theme park is probably more interesting/fun than Madurodam for a 9yo. www.netherlands-tourism.com/efteling-largest-theme-park-netherlands/
Giethoorn is one of the loveliest towns in NL. You could do a boat tour of the place. (You can’t get there by car.) You could spend all day puttering about there.
I love the Kroger-Müller art gallery (most amazing collection of Van Gogh and other impressionists, as well as other famous works, plus an outdoor sculpture and installation garden that kids tend to love) - plus it is in the middle of the Hooge Veluwe National park. They have free bikes there that you can use to cycle around the park. There are almost always Highland cows and deer to be seen and the landscape is both amazing and weird. *You can buy your food at the cafe at the museum, but I’d go to a supermarket and get a picnic lunch… I think it would be more fun with the bikes.

I lived in Arnhem and highly recommend the Openluchtmuseum. (“Open-air museum”). It’s probably a half day trip. Take sunscreen and hats. Weather in August can be quite hot.

@Padamae great blog; other than Anne Frank House (which they haven't studied yet - maybe because he is still in year 4?) that sounds like the sort of things we would enjoy. Plus pancakes and cycling of course 😅

I'm an Amsterdam blogger and the family blogger for the City of Amsterdam website "iAmsterdam".

Take a look at this section on my blog which has tons of info and inspiration for Amsterdam and beyond including age-focussed itineraries (the navigation links will help you sort between Ams and further afield)

Feel free to message me via the site if I can help with anything

Booked it! 3 nights in August, staying in a hotel near Beatrixpark/Amsterdam-Zuid.

Will be looking at the places and blogs mentioned with DS over the next few weeks - thanks everyone!
