Places to stay near Lyon

Hi there, We are driving to the South of France from the UK in late July. It would be nice to break the journey so I wondered if anyone has any recommendations of somewhere in the region of Lyon? I would rather not drive into the city itself so was trying to find somewhere nice nearby - either a small town where we could walk out and get dinner or a lovely hotel with restaurant.

We are a family of five (if that is relevant!!)

Thanks in advance.

We stayed at Camping Les Portes du Beaujolais. The best thing was the pool where we could cool off after a day in the car.

Amazing food and setting, I stayed one night last year and regretted not booking it for a whole week !

Thank you both! We’re not camping Fivemore but lovely area.

TwoBlondes - that’s absolutely perfect and they even have a triple room so we can fit five of us across two rooms. Thank you for saving me hours on Google!

I do recommend the city, I don't remember the traffic being bad and we could walk to Roman ruins from the hotel (or took a bus, 10 years ago) I stayed at the crowne plaza

I hope you love it as much as I did!

What did you think of the hotel?

It's not close to Lyon though, it's a good 2 hours away. Breaking up your trip coming from the UK it would probably make more sense to stop near Dijon or Beaune

Hi @TwoBlondes we ended up not booking for exactly the reason that @ItsRainingPens said - it was just too far down. I should have realised that we needed to be closer.
I found an amazing airbnb apartment in Beaune on the way down and a really beautiful BandB in Nuits-Saint-Georges- on the way back. Happy to share details if anyone else is looking for the same.
Have saved your recommendation for another time though!

This is the place in Nuit-saint-Georges. The host spoke fluent English and I would highly recommend for a night - the town is beautiful and less than ten minutes from the motorway.
