After reading all your recommendations for Crete, I've booked four nights in Chania for DD(13yo) and myself.

Would we be better off hiring a car if we want to see things like Zeus's cave, Knossos, Samaria Gorge, Balos beach etc or is public transport the way to go? I see a number of tour companies do fun sounding day trips from Chania to these destinations but they're £££ - is it worth doing a couple of these or better to DIY?
Thanks!

I drove in the Chania region with no problem at all. The roads are fine and pretty quiet. Self driving is just the best way to experience the Island - we found quiet beaches and authentic local restaurants.

Chania itself is busy but doable.

Have a great time - we just loved Crete.

Knossos is quite a way from Chania - about 2 hours one way. We drove in Crete without difficulties, but I wouldn't drive to and from Knossos in one day as it'll be a lot of driving. We drove from Chania to Iraklio and spent a few days there and saw Knossos then (only 20 minutes from Iraklio). I do think though regardless of whether you drive yourself or not it's much better to have a guide for going round Knossos as you'll get so much more out of it.
