Package holidays - confused

We have always travelled independently but this year I keep hearing it is safe to book a package and also that they are cheaper. I have been searching and so far they are far more expensive and from what I can see the accommodation isn’t as nice and certainly only 1 bedroom rather than 2. Started with Jet2 and they are £££ especially avoiding the nighttime flights. Tui seems a tad cheaper but still not loads. Am I missing something or is it because I’m good at finding independent pleasant bargains?! Are there any other agents to try. Possibly it’s because we are only looking at self catering - maybe package inclusive is cheaper than independent inclusive? What is the docfe

@BarbaraofSeville Yes, I know. That's why I said 'usually' and 'probably' and not 'always'. It varies - not least between the tour operators, the hotel booking sites and booking directly (which is sometimes, but not always, the cheapest).

Thanks everyone. The nature of our business and medical conditions means we can’t book really far in advance and need flights at a decent time of day. I have finally found an indie holiday I’m happy with : JET2 flights at a decent time and price, not from our local airport but we have friends we can stay . They offered me the related package holidays but still £1000 cheaper to go with the lovely independent rentals I have found. So finally satisfied . All really useful info given so thank you and enjoy your holidays x
