Child passport renewal

hi can anyone help with child passport renewal? I understand the new rules/dates for adult and 10 yr passports etc but I have twins who had passports issued Feb 2018 - they expire August 23 but understand that we may loose those extra 6 months. Do they then expire Feb 23 and if so does it mean that by Aug 22 they are defunct as they don't have 6 months on them? can't find any advice online or a passport checker?

I would think so, yes, defunct Aug 22.

is it def 6 months they need for EU or 3 months?

No, their passport is valid until Aug 23 and you only need 3 months to travel to EU.
