We’re flying into Rome Fiumicino early and can’t get into our holiday home til 4. Thinking of picking up the hire car and heading into Rome for a few hours and wondering whether there is

Argh this app!

I was wondering whether there were any park and ride or rail type things - I’ve googled and there seems to be plenty of stations but limited parking by the looks of it.

We may be better off leaving car and luggage at airport and getting the fast train into the city.

Thanks for any advice!

Yep, leave your bags at the left luggage facility and head into the city via train.

Definitely don’t drive into the city. Train is a fast and cheap option but bear in mind the station isn’t in or very near the historic centre so you’d need to get transport from there.

One other suggestion is to go to Ostia Antica which is like a mini Pompeii - it’s very close to Fiumicino. Alternatively if it’s in the right direction for you, Lake Bracciano has some lovely waterside restaurants, we had a very nice lunch there while the kids played on the beach (boat rental also possible).

Yes, don't bother with a car. Yake the train or an Uber.

LIZS · 04/06/2022 12:13

Taxis have a flat rate into the city.

The train goes into Termini then it's just a 10-15 min walk down the hill to the Colosseum and then you've got the forum, Trajan's column, Victor Emmanuel building, Capitoline museum and palatine hill down there too. There's some lovely restaurants down there as well. I'm jealous - I love Rome!

Ostia Antica looks amazing thanks @minipie. That’s a great alternative for us.

Although it’s near, I think you’d have go into the city and out again for Ostia Antica.

GiantKitten · 04/06/2022 13:15

Plus it’s a very big site - I think with limited time you’d be better just doing the Forum area.
(Depends how energetic you are of course!)

Into Termini, down into the metro and a couple of stops to the main sites.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2022 13:39

Ostia antica is absolutely amazing!

That’s true, the Colosseum is not too far from Termini, but you must have advance tickets.

OP will have a hire car (I think?) so Ostia Antica should be easily accessible. Avoids having to go back to the airport to pick up the car and bags.

Just to warn you OP, when we flew into Fiumicino last Saturday, the passport control queue was very long and slow, unless you have EU passports. It may have been just that day of course

BillStickersIsInnocent · 04/06/2022 14:16

Yes we’ll have a hire car.

Thanks @minipie that’s really useful to know. We might not have as much time to play with as I’d assumed!

Oh if you’re getting your car first then Ostia Antica should be quite a nice introduction to mad Rome drivers 🙂
We loved it too. I was particularly fond of the marble slab in the fishmongers.

Ostia Antica is amazing. Although I had a massive row with dh there so not such fond memories. 😂
