ds1 is massively into surfing and ds2 is obsessed with Komodo dragons so I booked us to go to Indonesia (flying to Bali) for 2 weeks in October. We’re flying into Bali and I’ve booked us into the Four Seasons on Ubud for a couple of days to recover from the flight and also planning to fly to Flores for a couple of days to do a trip to Komodo Island. I haven’t booked anything other than the flights and hotel in Ubud so far but was loosely planning to stay around Bali for most of the holiday.

Since then I’ve read the thread about places not living up to expectations and Bali kept coming up as being awful. I’ve now read loads of reviews saying how dirty, rough and full of drunken Australians/ Brits it is and I’m thinking I’ve made a huge mistake. Has anyone got any recommendations for places to visit possibly off the beaten track a bit or with good surf but relatively safe? I’m contemplating maybe going to different islands rather than hanging around on Bali but don’t know where to start.

Please help someone!

We flew to Java, transferred into jakarta and into yoggykarta (forget the spelling) for amazing temples and culture for 2 or 3 nights. Were amazing compared to Bali offerings. We also had 2 nights in Borneo for sepilok orangutans and sun bears then 2 nights on q quieter turtle Island and then back to bali for a few nights one Easter holiday fortnight
Great trip - hope you have fun

Yogyakarta, known as Yogya, pronounced Jogja!
It's fantastic there too, did you do Borobudur?

Yes we did! Loved it, hired a random escorted guide for the day as otherwise feel like I'm looking at generic old stuff, even with a guidebook!
Was in a rush to leave the house earlier haha - yoggy somethinggg

It's wonderful.
I went to Thailand several times too and whilst I had a great time, fir me, it's not a patch on Indonesia.
I find even the most touristy bits, Kuta etc, are much less sex touristy too, which is v off putting in Thailand.
I actually have a huge soft spot for Kuta, particularly as I was there just before and after the Bali bomb in 2002, I was actually in Lombok at the time.

@RampantIvy , thank you, Sanur is where I meant when I said Samed. I got confused, as it had been so long since we’d been. I should have opened Google maps and retraced our route, it would have led to less mix-up.
We stayed in the Alila Ubud due to the views from the infinity pool, and can heartily recommend the chain. Everything was perfect. They have a few in Bali and a few more further afield.

Bali is beautiful, I loved it there. Ubud is lovely, very atmospheric and we had a lovely trip to Seminyak too - we stayed in a gorgeous villa with its own pool. Lots of interesting galleries and good shopping in the area. Loved exploring the island - into the hills and the black sand beaches (in the north?). I lived in Asia and had several amazing holidays in Bali - am sure you'll have a wonderful trip. Am very jealous!
