We are going to Bangkok and Chiang Mai this summer, spending four days in each. I would love recommendations of what to do, where to shop, where to eat etc. Our children are 17 and 15.

From Bangkok, this day tour is a must-do www.bangkokelephantcaresanctuary.com/17228528/floating-market-elephants-world-sanctuary-park although you might be able to find something similar but cheaper on viator or Getyourguide.
Also you must visit Ayutthaya. You can get the train from Hua Lamphong in Bangkok. They leave every hour and it takes anout 1.5 hours.

We are staying in Elephant Hills for a few days, so have the elephants covered. But I will look up Ayutthaya. Thanks

Night market in Chiangmai is a must do - look out for the street food market to the side of the main market.

If you are active types there's a great hike to two temples - one small and serene halfway up the mountain (easy trek from the zoo area). Then a tougher longer trek to the top to reach the temple of Wat Fra Doi Suthep which is spectacular and really busy. Or you can get a taxi/tuktuk straight to the top.

Another vote for Ayutthaya. Serene and stunningly beautuful. We went on a day trip from Bangkok. Our hotel in Chaing Mai also offered very cheap private tours of the area. We picked a couple and our guide was a young local student who was amazing - may appeal to your teens. Have fun.

Did white water rafting from Chang Mai. That was good.

The temple tours in Bangkok and the floating market/railway tour there too. All can be booked on Get Your Guide. Amazing tours, especially the second.

Second a pp about the night market in Chiang Mai - amazing! The Old City is also great. Doi Inthanon was beautiful too.
