Help! Lost passports and travelling on Saturday!

We are supposed to be going on holiday on Saturday but have lost our passports. I have literally spent the last 24 hours turning the house upside down and they are not here. I can only conclude that i chucked them out by mistake or someone nicked them (we have had a nanny and a couple of workmen in the house but noone I think would steal them). Tried to book a fast track appointment to replace them and it says no appointment available and from what i am reading we are not going to be able to get one for weeks at best. We can't cancel the flights and DS is going to miss the football tour we were going to. The flights was extortionate as well. I honestly feel like jumping off a cliff.

yaaaaayyyy you found them!! That's fantastic. Have a wonderful trip

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 23/05/2022 17:13

Yay, brilliant! Have a wonderful trip! 😊😊😊

winterrabbit · 23/05/2022 17:29

Thanks again all! All three passports were there, mine and my DSs. I am literally over the moon with relief. I had told DS2 yesterday that I was really sorry but we most likely wouldn't go as no passports and no means of replacing them in time so texted them both at school to tell them the good news. The scary thing is that I did search carefully and I actually would not have found them unless DH had been stood next to me at a particular angle and seen the passports. Complete fluke that we discovered them. I don't feel like I was careless in the search but now know to literally run your hands under each drawer to check nothing underneath. I must've checked that drawer 50 times. Thank you all again, the moral support really helped! I still think it's crappy that there is currently no fast track service to help people who genuinely do lose their passports/

Exactly! You go through logically everything that could have happened to them which includes someone taking them. I said at the outset that I thought it unlikely and considered it amongst all other options whilst also searching. Nonsense that I was quick to accuse someone else!

So happy for you. We have ALL all lost and mislaid things before - pay no heed to the nay sayers! 😊

Haven't lost a passport actually. Nor do I accuse people of theft when they were in a drawer the whole time. You still protest you aren't careless yet were happy to blame innocent workmen and such likes for stealing them 🙄

Topseyt123 · 23/05/2022 18:00

Aww, my heart was in my mouth when I read your OP and the updates.

I remember be just before one of our holidays (we were going to Portugal) and I suddenly realised that DD2's passport was not in my desk drawer with the rest of the family's and I panicked.

It turned up in the pocket of her sports holdall that she had used when we had gone on a family trip to visit DD1 in Paris a few months previously.

I'm so glad you have found them and can now relax. Ignore all those criticising on here. They must be soo perfect.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/05/2022 18:06

We’ve got a safe in our house, it was about £40 in B&Q but nothing can get lost in it like a drawer.

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 23/05/2022 18:20

Really chuffed for you OP. As a keen traveller I have been really invested in this thread and though I don't know you from Adam am over the moon for you all.

Losing "stuff" is bad enough but when it's something so important, it is a horrible, horrible feeling.

I hope you all have a blast 😎

BronwenFrideswide · 23/05/2022 18:22

Great news, OP!

Finalcountdowntoourtripaway · 23/05/2022 22:12

Bet the Best Dm Award if yours in your home tonight op!!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/05/2022 23:38

Oh that's great news!
So pleased you've found them - it's amazing where the little buggers can hide themselves! Now create a file for them in your office/drawer and when you return, put them in there, so you never have this again (this is the sort of thing you never do until you lose the feckers).
Have a lovely trip! Grin

rainsunsnow · 24/05/2022 00:22

Hooray! Have a great holiday!

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/05/2022 09:08

Couldn't find this thread yesterday for an update.
So pleased you have found them, that time while looking is just horrendous.
Enjoy your time away.

mishmased · 24/05/2022 09:46

@winterrabbit glad you found them. This happened to us earlier this month. The night before we were to go to Spain and I couldn't find all 4 passports. I have been watching them all week as I only found them a month ago after nearly two years. Looked everywhere and was almost in tears. Asked DH several times if he gave them back to me after making copies and he said he did. I needed up going into the office and checking around the printer only to find it stuck under the desk! He made the copies but never gave me back the passports. I was too relieved to even speak.

mishmased · 24/05/2022 09:47

Enjoy your holiday ☀️

winterrabbit · 24/05/2022 10:10

Ah, thanks so much all. Just so relieved and so looking forward to going! Scary though as it was completely by chance that we discovered them and if DH had not been standing next to me at that time then we would not have found them. The drawer had a sort of double layer that neither of us knew about (it's an IKEA divider with small drawers) as I thought I was looking at the drawer beneath, if you get me, as they are both white. And it was literally as final check in that place as we had officially given up the search. Would have been awful to see all DS's friends go off on tour and not be able to go, so thank god! I feel so bad though for all those who have had their passports lost or stolen or who won't get them back in time. So crap that the government can't get it sorted especially if people are willing to pay for a same day or 2 day service. There used to be one.

That's brilliant news OP. I'm so pleased for you. It really did sound like you had looked everywhere.

One good thing is I bet you never misplace them again.

We have a big filing cabinet and our passports are all kept in a folder in there.

I'm naturally a bit disorganized but can feel anxious if I can't find things so I over compensate by being incredible careful about filing things. I always know exactly where everything is. I can be quite smug about it.

When my kids left home I gave them each a filing cabinet 😌

I'm so pleased for you but would also recommend you apply for those other nationality passports now - just in case!!
