Using Monzo in USA??
Poppiesway1 · 22/05/2022 12:50
Hello,
my 16yr old ds will travelling to America soon, to stay with family. He’s too young for a travel card such as the Post Office or the ASDA currency travel card. I’ve been recommended opening him up a MONZO account however I’ve not heard of them before and unsure how easy it will be for me to top his account up while he’s away?
does anyone have any experience of using Monzo at all?? Good or bad!
Thankyou

Oh well.. he has to be 18 for MONZO too… any ideas on he can take him travel money with him instead of physical dollars??

Monzo is just like any other bank account. To add money to the account for him, you'd just need to make a bank transfer from your own account. Your DS can download the Monzo app and see his balance/transactions in real time.

I used it in Mexico and it was fine. Apart from the first shop I went in it got declined. I rang them up, someone answered straight away, did something online so my card would work (something to do with the Mexico banking system being a bit different) and it worked 2 mins later. I could view my balance on the app easily. Can’t remember about topping up but it must have been simple.

No, Monzo now available for 16&17 year olds - my 16yo DD opened one 2 weeks ago for a trip to France.
Topping up is ridiculously easy (and instant), and it's super flexible, and a dream to manage online.
We use it for travelling, although never in the US. Can't imagine why it would be an issue though.
Took about 3-4 days for the card to come through, but could use it online immediately.

I would highly recommend getting a Caxton FX card.

Starling is another option. I switched to them from Monzo as fewer restrictions on overseas spending.

@EmmaStone How did you get round the ID? They wanted him to use photo ID to prove he was over 18..
im going to open one myself instead of using my post office currency card.
Thankyou all for your replies!

I use Monzo as my main account and have used it in Europe, I can use it as much as I want as its my main account but there are restrictions if you don’t.
It is available for 16-17 year olds too I’m sure
