Just trying to make the best use of the precious time. Especially wondering what life is like on a Sunday, are opening hours very limited/strict? Any advice/ideas much appreciated.

Everything will be open. Even in non touristy towns most shops open on Sundays nowadays and in the summer they often don't close for lunchtime. In tourist places like Sorrento they'll stay open later probably as well.

Agree that everything is open.
We went a few years ago. Just our thoughts :
We loved Herculaneum & Pompeii ; ride along the Amalfi coast was beautiful; not very impressed with Capri - rip-off prices for coffee etc; Vesuvio a bit dull compared to Etna; Sorrento itself is lovely - but try to avoid when the cruise ships are docked.

As busy on Sundays as rest of week. Definitely Pompeii and Herculaneum, boat trip to Capri or around to Amalfi, lunch at Marina Piccolo, visit to Roman villa ruins at the headland and cove at Capo.

Thank you, all.

I love Sorrento.

Definitely do Herculaneum as well as Pompeii. Capri was lovely too and we really enjoyed Vesuvius.

Just wandering around Sorrento is nice too - lots of orange trees and lemon trees. Beautiful.

The Amalfi coast is stunning too.

If you happen to be there on the first Sunday of the month, entrance is free to Pompeii. You need to reserve tickets on the website.

Everything else will be open as normal and the Circumvesuviana will be running as normal (ie erratically!)
