Help! How to get my son a Shengen area visa (multiple countries)

I'm in the UK. I am trying to organise a family holiday in France. Eldest DS (19) is complicating this because he'll have been in Italy for 90 days in the rolling 180 day period, so for him to join us in France he'll need to have a visa.

The French visa application website doesn't cater for our situation of him having been in Italy, it only deals with 'are you staying in France shorter than 90 days = you don't need a visa' or 'are you staying in France longer than 90 days = you need a visa'.

I obviously just said he'll be staying longer than 90 days so we can do the form, but it wants details of where he'll be staying for his trip, which we haven't booked yet because we want to see if we can get a visa first.

Anyone been in this situation and have any tips or knowledge to share?

Could you sidestep France and get an Italian visa instead? He'd be able to go on holiday in France with an Italian visa, althoygh he might have to travel visa Italy

Can you not get him a schengen visa in Italy ? Once he has a multiple entry one he can Go anywhere in schengen

He's only in Italy until May 31st and I doubt he'll be able to get to a visa office there as he's wild camping on a walking trail.

If he's capable of organising a wild camping trip surely he's capable of getting his arse to a visa office?! He'll probably have to apply from the UK anyway, so just book an appointment in London for when he's back.

You can't I don't think unless he can get a work visa eg becomes a resident in the country. (for tax purposes). Bloody brexit

He needs a Schengen visa via the Italian consulate, as that’s where he’ll be spending the most time.

We've chased around trying to get him a French visa but it's not possible, so we're giving up and going to Croatia instead (different rules).

It's not possible for him to get an Italian visa extension - their rules are very strict and don't allow extension unless in certain circumstances.
