Tunisa?

Had anyone been to Tunisa with their DC alone? I noticed it's really cheap. Is it similar to Turkey?

It’s less developed than Turkey, poorer. There are lovely places to visit, eg the island of Djerba, Sidi Bou Said which is a cute village, the amphitheater at Jem, Matmata, the troglodyte village where much of which Star Wars was filmed, trips out to the desert. I found it a bit sex-pesty though, so depending on your childrens’s ages, they might attract some unwanted attention.

No. Turkey is lovely. Tunisia was dirt poor and filthy and I felt anxious the whole time. Worst holiday we’ve ever had an I would never go again

Took the words out of my mouth.

AmbushedByCake1 · 17/05/2022 12:12

I've been to both. Tunisia I wouldn't return to, Turkey I absolutely loved and would go back in a heartbeat. Stayed off the beaten track in a beach town called Cirali, I hope to return one day.

Albgo · 17/05/2022 12:16

I've been to both too. They're not comparable. I've been to cities and the coast in Turkey and adored all of it. I've been to Tunisia twice and wouldn't necessarily recommend it. The most recent time we stayed in an all inclusive beach resort. We didn't leave the resort the whole time we were there. Tunisia is very run down and poor. It made me feel a bit sad being there tbh.

LadyLolaRuben · 17/05/2022 12:20

Djerba is lovely. Ive been there and Djerba beach hotel all inclusive with private section of beach was great (that was 2015 so can't vouch for how it is now). Kids club great. I felt really safe. I didnt leave resort or need to

midsomermurderess · 17/05/2022 12:25

Down around Cirali, on what is called the Turquoise Cost, is lovely. Turkey is very different to Tunisia, much more developed and sophisticated, and while obviously it’s a Muslim country, that’s worn more lightly than Tunisia. I guess some of the reasons it’s more expensive.

YessicaHaircut · 17/05/2022 12:25

I’ve been to Tunisia pre-DC and wouldn’t receive it really. Didn’t feel very safe outside the walls of the resort and definitely wouldn’t be keen to visit again. DH also went on a family holiday there as a teen and said the same.

YessicaHaircut · 17/05/2022 12:26

wouldn’t recommend *it

fairgame84 · 17/05/2022 12:45

I've been to Tunisia a few times as my husband is Tunisian.
I've been alone with teen DS as well.
It's nothing like European holidays e.g Spain etc. It's very sex pesty as previous pp said. You will get scammed in the shops and accosted by visa geezers at every opportunity.
If you go then you need to make it a hotel holiday and stay in the resort.
The hotels are lovely and the beaches are lovely.
Tunisia is actually a very beautiful country away from the tourist spots but I wouldn't recommend exploring it as a single woman.

thismeansnothing · 17/05/2022 12:56

I went to Tunisia in 2008 and loved it. We went in October and it was still hot without being unbearable. We stopped in Sousse, we had a wander to Port el Kantoui one day but didn't like the feel of it. The beach was nice soft sand and clean and the sea was looooverly. We werent hassled much, yerr you do get people on the beach selling tat but if you tell um no, they leave you be. We did the trip to el jem to see the amphitheatre and karouan (?) Where is a town of religious importance. Was a nice week and I wouldn't hesitate going again now I've got kids.

thismeansnothing · 17/05/2022 12:59

The hotel we stopped at was half board so we ate out a few times in Sousse. We like to explore and leave the hotel grounds. Obviously have your whits about you like in any country but we didn't have any problems.

Roastonsun8 · 17/05/2022 14:28

Thank you so much for your input. I noticed its coming up the cheapest and I read on old threads there's a reason!

I've been to 3rd world Countrys like the carribean but again not really comparable as they are not Muslim Countries although certain parts have extreme poverty also.

I definitely would stay in the hotel and not venture outside as there would just me myself and DS. I may just stick with Turkey Shame because I like to try different places and there's some nice hotels in Tunisa but I wouldn't want to put my child in danger. I'm not usually someone who refuse to go to a certain place... but it's telling that its cheap!

I don't think anyone is saying your dc would be in danger but it can be uncomfortable if you are sightseeing as a woman. My dd and I were pestered even with my dh there. The men have little respect for how we choose to live and do see us as being of loose morals iyswim. Sad as some fascinating history/sights.

FrownedUpon · 17/05/2022 14:57

Hated Tunisia. Got hassled a lot, especially in Sousse. Sousse also smelt terrible. Would never go back.

fairgame84 · 17/05/2022 15:31

Your child would not be in danger, its not dangerous in that sense but it's definitely uncomfortable as a woman. If your child is a teenage girl then she would definitely get hassled.
You will be fine in the hotel.

We went in 2985 and got hassled a lot. Sussex smelled of sewage most of the time. I will never go back there.

Fat fingers

Aria2015 · 17/05/2022 15:37

Tunisia is the worst holiday I've ever been on. Didn't feel safe and the men are absolute nuisances that have no respect for western women.

Good to know, that in the future Sussex will smell of sewage 😅

Fifi0102 · 17/05/2022 16:00

Don't take your DC there especially if you have daughters. I was sexually assaulted by a waiter over there he put alcohol in my drink then attacked me I was 12 years old! Some of the men are very disrespectful .

Fifi0102 · 17/05/2022 16:01

This was a hotel waiter by the way in the resort.

cptartapp · 17/05/2022 16:03

I've been twice with youngish DC. Weather and hotel great, lovely beaches. But outside of that rather dirty and intimidating.
The only exception was the amphitheatre at El Jem which knocked the Colosseum out the park. So much better preserved, no crowds and able to climb all over it from the dungeons to the highest points. Amazing trip.
Having been twice to Tunisia though I wouldn't go again.

usernotfound0000 · 17/05/2022 16:09

Another saying avoid! I went with an ex in 2006 and I felt very uncomfortable. I was hassled a lot despite being with a man. I would never go back.

Gah, autocorrect. This is why I prefer using my laptop.
Sousse smelled of sewage.
