My child is going to portugal with his friends parents and needs a parental consent letter.Does this need to be a printed legal document or can it be a written letter.I've looked online but it's not really giving a clear answer. Also does he need to take his birth certificate aswell ?

You can download a template online. Take photocopies of his birth certificate and all of your details.
Check entry requirements into Portugal too, some countries insist on a proper witnesses and notarised document. I don't think Portugal does thoughs.
Tell him to keep them for re-entry too- no border control leaving the UK- he'll be stopped by the airline if at all, but coming back in he might also be asked.
Ignore the posters who'll now respond saying they've travelled with a minor and no consent letter and never been stopped. The end of their sentence should read 'yet'

Yes thats what I was worried about ,being told something wrong or told he won't get stopped when they do actually check. We've only holidayed in the UK before so I'm just trying to make sure he's got absolutely everything I'll feel awful if I've missed something and he can't go.Im in a right panic.Thankyou for replying.

Oh my goodness, I've not considered this at all. My 16YO is going to France next week with a friend and his parents, so it sounds as though I should draft a letter as well?

I'm not sure about France, but I'd probably do it just in case.I've downloaded 2 to print off and have a look at and I'm going to get a copy of his birth certificate just to be on the safe side.

Did your son get on okay going through security with the consent forms? My daughter is going soon to Portugal and I also can’t find any official consent form. Nightmare! Can I ask what template you printed? or from which website? Thanks!

Hi I've only just seen your message so your daughter has probably already gone on holiday by now!but if not and for anyone else I used Rocket lawyer template, just filled it out online and then printed it off.I'm not sure but I think you have to set up a payment card but then you just cancel it straight after,so it is free.
He never actually got asked in the end but best to have it.

We took DDs friend when they were 15.
it was a template the parents found online.
It was child’s name, DOB and passport number, permission for me (named) to take him to the countries we visited on the dates stated. Then signed by both parents with their passport numbers and their signatures witnessed.
We were asked if we had a letter and were told if we hadn’t it would have been “a big problem” but they were happy with the letter. They didn’t check any details but did read it thoroughly
