DS passport expires 6 months after travel date for Netherlands - are we ok??

DS is on a child passport which expires early February 2023. We are travelling to the Netherlands early August 2022.
It just occurred as we were putting my new passport away that his passport will have exactly 6 months left on the date of outbound travel. I looked it up and for the Netherlands it actually says you need at least 3 months remaining.
We're ok, right? I'm second guessing myself after seeing threads this morning about people being caught short.

You may need to check with the airline as well, some of them are being v cautious since they have to bear the costs of flying you home if you're not allowed into the country.

The important dates for border control are:

  • the passport's issue date
  • your date of departure from the Netherlands

The passport will only be valid for 5 years from the issue date. If extra months have been added on (carried over from the last passport) these won't count.

There must be 3 months left on the passport (calculated as issue date + 5 years - 3 months) on the day you leave the Netherlands, not the day you arrive.

It looks as if most airlines are following the same rules but check with yours if you're flying.

the validity thing isn't true for child passports as they are always less than 10 years. 3 months should be sufficient, but double check with the carrier,

This is the government advice.

Can I jump in and ask a question about child passports too please?

We are hoping to go on holiday towards the end of July, travelling back about 26th. Dds passport expires on 24th October 22 so will this be ok? Do they work the 3 months by date or weeks from home bound flight?

cutting it fine I know!

@HelloDaisy everything I've seen talks about months, not days or weeks (which is weird). So I think the last day you can exit is the 24th July because that's three months before 24th October.

@tribpot That’s what I thought which sadly doesn’t give us much time for a holiday! Thanks for your reply.

Think I will either try the fast track service and see what happens or we will go to Scotland instead!
