All depends on the time of year you are going!

are you flying direct to Bangkok or Phuket?

We will be going first week of July. I understand it is the monsoon but we don’t have much choice as have to go in school holidays

We travelled to Thailand just pre-covid, also in July as we are restricted to school holidays. We split our time between Bangkok, Chiangmai, and Koh Samui as the beach resort (having read that this side of the coast was better in July weather wise). It rained heavily on our first day, but after that it was sunny with the very odd cloud, and mid-20s which was perfect for us.
We stayed at the Manathai resort in Lamai Beach, which was a lovely hotel with a couple of quiet pools for relaxing within the hotel, and then a livelier pool and pool bar/restaurant across the road. We were initially “wtf” but actually appreciated how
peaceful it kept the hotel area to have it separate. There’s a 7-11 across the road for any bits and pieces you’d need, a few local restaurants, and a laundry place within a few mins walk. Lamai is a quieter resort than Chaweng, but still lively enough, with lots of restaurants and bars. There was a shuttle from the hotel running up to the fisherman’s village, and tuk-tuks would take you into Lamai town, although it’s walkable, especially along the beach. Our kids loved the hotel complex, and the beach bars further down the strip. We’ve never gone to the same place twice on holiday, preferring to see new places, but I’d definitely return there.

Agree with a PP regarding the Sala Samui, we loved it. But, with children your age there isn't a lot for them to do, and I didn't see many their age.

Somewhere like the Centara might be better?

Koh Samui is great in July, avoid Phuket and that side as it is likely to have a lot more rain.

Thank you. We are looking at the resorts in Koh Samui. Looking for one that suits all of us with a nice beach near by.

Did you decide on a resort OP?

We’re going to Rocky’s Boutique on Samui this summer. Our kids are primary school age. We’ve got a pool villa there, so I have high hopes!
