I'm looking for advice on Sorrento or the area around Sorrento.
Looking at going next August.
Planning on doing the usual sites Pompeii, Capri, boat trips etc.
Is it best to stay in Sorrento of just outside, we like to be able to take a walk out at night for a drink.

Depends where outside you mean. If up on the cliffs or hills behind the resort it won't be wAlkable at night, there are smaller resorts along the Circumvesuviana line but with fewer facilities.

Aah ok, I'm still in the research mode at the moment, so don't really know much!

And check where the Capri boats leave from as the harbour is slightly out of the main area of Sorrento.

We stayed at the Ulisse (recommended to me on here) which despite the name is a hotel not a hostel! It was perfectly located for an evening stroll either to the restaurant and market district, or down some (steep) steps to the waterfront.

They organised a fab Capri tour from us. It was a bit of a hike back to the train station for Pompeii, kids were relatively young so we took a taxi.

We stayed in the Aminta hotel up on the hill, they ran a courtesy bus when we stayed. We walked down into town through the olive groves and would take the bus up the hill. The local bus service had a stop in front of the hotel too.

We always stay at the Hotel Bristol. About 15 min walk from the centre. Uphill on way back but not challenging. Foreigners club has the best views.

We stayed at this gorgeous little hotel on the marina. Full view of mount Vesuvius from our balcony. Beautiful terrace.

Recommend you find a great little restaurant called Meating and have the filet steak with Gorgonzola sauce. Best meal we've ever had!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. The one 'would like' from my DD is a pool!
Has anyone stayed in Sant Angnello?

I've stayed in Sant Agnello and it was lovely, some nice little restaurants there, and a quick, easy walk along to Sorrento. Nice harbour and little cave you can walk down into the cliff.

We stayed here too about 11 years ago though. Loved the hotel and although out of Sorrento centre the bus was great, could get food and drinks then the last hotel bus back up.

We also did day trips to Pompeii, Naples , Herculaneum, Capri and a day trip down the coast etc. Sorrento was a lovely place as a base. Was a fabulous holiday.

Another vote for Sant Agnelo. Theres a little train to sorrento but its SO much cheaper in terms of hotels. If you miss all the trains back its only a 30 min walk as well.

Loved Sant Agnelo. Great location and a bit cheaper than central Sorrento. It all ultimately merged into one.

We stayed at Hotel Bristol in Sorrento when we went in 2019. Had a lovely room overlooking the sea. Easy walk into Sorrento centre; uphill on way back but not too far - I managed it even with my dodgy joints!

We flew into Naples and then used the hydrofoil to get over to Sorrento. There is a bus to the port from the airport.

We used the train to visit Pompeii, which worked really well.
We caught a boat from Sorrento to Capri.
We also used the buses to visit Positano - very windy roads over the hills, but great views.

Rest of the time we chilled a lot and pottered around Sorrento, enjoying the mozzarella and limoncello!

Hotel Bristol, where we stayed, has a pool
