East Coast USA - where to holiday this summer?

We're looking to go to the US this summer and were planning on going to California, and then Grand Canyon, Yosemite, etc. But we've had to shorten our trip to 2 weeks so are looking at the East Coast instead. We love Cape Cod and we've been to Atlanta and Florida in the winter months, spent time in New York and Philadelphia. We'd like good weather and we've got 3 teens to entertain too. Any recommendations?

Strongly recommend Upstate New York - around Lake George.

Kennebunkport in Maine is the land of the gods!! I’m utterly obsessed by it! Have a Google and try not to fall in love!

Agree with the pp - Kennebunkport is wonderful. I'd also recommend the lakes/mountains of New Hampshire.

Yes, upstate NY is pretty, but I prefer Maine. Maine has numerous lakeside cabins you can rent for a summer complete with swimming beaches and sailboats. These are usually short drive to beaches and seaside towns. The seaside towns are picture perfect, the beaches wonderful. And the best lobsters in the world come from the Maine sound. But Maine is a bit cooler temperature wise. About as warm as Cornwall for comparison.

If you want proper hot summer weather, then head to Virginia Berry Hill/Shenandoah Park or North Carolina coast- Outer Banks.

Yes - as well as Upstate New York I do recommend Maine and the White Mountains in NH (where you go to the out of season Mountain resorts for all sorts of summer fun and Lake swimming). When we went to Maine we found a rental property via TripAdviser and it turned out to be a cannabis farm.

Yikes at the cannabis farm!

Yes, it is less hot than further south. But it is humid on the east coast so totally different climate to Cornwall. And a lot sunnier ime.

East Coast USA is hot and humid in the summertime, but the further north you go, the less hot it is. Upstate New York is glorious in the summertime, as is coastal Maine - both really beautiful and not really on the UK tourist map. Lake George/Saratoga Springs are lovely, and the Finger Lakes region is supposed to be lovely (I've not been, but Google pictures). Coastal Maine has hundreds of islands, bays, little towns - if you're into sailing or water sports you could have a great time, but even if you're not it's very unspoilt and charming.

North Carolina sounds. Maine is also a good shout.

JolieJ · 27/04/2022 09:31

South Carolina, Charleston for a city break and then Hilton Head for beaches

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are lovely and you could combine with a visit to Washington DC, which is probably the closest airport from the UK. They are busy and hot in summer though and the summer houses down there cost $$$ to rent!
