Athens: Where to stay?

My partner and I are planning on doing Athens in August. We are going mostly for the history and culture. We aren't into partying.

Which would be the best area for us to stay in?

Any companies you'd recommend booking through? (Please don't recommend Jet 2 as I will never use them again after a terrible past experience!)

Plaka and Monastiraki neighborhoods have the most attractions and museums. They’re also very safe and offer easy transportation. Monastiraki Station has a direct train to Piraeus ferry port and the international airport. Monastiraki has the best mix of good food and atmosphere, with plenty of little cafes serving both locals and tourists . Psirri is the nightlife hub, with tons of bars, clubs, cafes, and restaurants all radiating out from Hero’s Square, so steer clear of there.
Can’t comment on who to book with, as we also do it direct.

Hi! We stayed for 4 nights at Hotel Stanley 4* and super nice rooftop pool and restaurant over looking the acropolis. The area isn’t amazing but it’s 3 stops on the metro for the acropolis. The nicest part is the acropolis area plaka but we preferred to compromise abit on the area for such a nice hotel.

It will be very, very hot in August for sight seeing. We've just come back from a Greece trip, stayed in a gorgeous hotel in Athens (The Modernist), but no pool - in August I'd say that was an absolute must! As a PP suggests, Plaka or Monastiraki are in the heart of everything.

In monastiraki and it was great! Def book a room with a balcony for a view of the Parthenon. The hotel has a rooftop bar with truly beautiful views. Very centrally located and the underground station is just a hundred yards away! It has air con which you would need on the summer.
