Travelling this October with teens. Want to be active so looks like Sal might be best for water sports? Is that right? Any hotel or complex recommendations at all?

DB and SIL are there at the moment, with young teens. I sent him the link and this is his reply:
I would have to join to comment but you can reply that your brother is in the Hilton and it’s very nice. The other complex to consider is the Melia Dunas but it’s more like a mini village with bigger choice of restaurants and places to sit in the day. Hilton is a bit quieter and also walking distance from Santa Maria town although taxis are cheap anyway. You can book up water sports from anywhere-lots of options.

If he comes back with any more comments I'll let you know. He's been sending me lovely photos.

We stayed in Sal.

The Rui palace Santa Maria is a great hotel.

Short walk into town.
Right on the beach.
There is a Facebook group you can join with lots of good advice on it

Really good food and drinks. It is a new hotel.

Choose a local guide. I would recommend Edgar Pires. Absolutely lovely man. Great value, safe trips. You can find him on Facebook too.

My brother went to Sal recently because he's a big kite surfing/watersports fan. He said there's not much else to do other than watersports and he wouldn't choose that island if he just wanted to chill out as it was very windy/flat - perfect for kite surfing though.

It is a developing country but there are excursions.

Zip lining
Floating at the salt flats
The blue hole
Horse riding
Quad biking
Visiting the blue hole
Pirate ship trips.
Open jeep island tour.

It is a very poor country. There is a bar in Sal town that will accept donations and ensure they are dropped off at local schools.

They also distribute toiletries and period products.

(I can supply a list if required as TUI have a scheme that allows you to take donations without it affecting your weight limits)
