Lively but nice holiday resorts for a pair of 40 year olds

Hello, my friend and I are planning a holiday for next summer in 'celebration' of turning 40. We'd like a sandy beach and a place with nice bars but not too crazy. Does anyone have any suggestions as the choice is overwheming? Thanks

Tavira in the Algarve. Or anywhere in the Algarve really.
