Thinking of going to this area. We went last year and, although we had a lovely gite etc, we were a bit underwhelmed by the bit we were in - near Niort. The countryside was a bit flat and not super picturesque/not that many interesting villages etc. We didn't venture too far exploring, so we were wondering what it's like a bit further south - round St Jean d'Angely or Saintes or Gemozac? Are the beaches nice for little ones at Meschers and St Georges?
If you know the area, I'd love to hear your thoughts?

Does the Royan area count? Is camping/Mobile home an option?

We went to St Palais on the coast with Canvas Holidays. Over the road from the camp site is the Atlantic, with the waves crashing. The (big) beach is a short (ish) walk; it's buzzing with people, and there are some nice markets nearby; there are lots of restaurants, nice coastal walk etc. If you go in July there are fields full of Sunflowers. We always went mid August, and just missed them.

We visited Saintes, and it was lovely.
