Any advice for missing checked luggage?

DS has gone on a backpacking trip for 4 months in South America. Flew out on Sunday from Heathrow with two following flights. He was informed after second flight that his backpack was still in London and to get a code on arrival to trace. We had put one of those tracking devices in the bag. Nearly five days later it’s still saying it’s at Heathrow, the code just says missing luggage, neither airline or airport tell us what to do- all blaming it on each other. I’ve reached out via phone and social media. Has anyone got any advice that we might not have thought of? So annoying as it had meds/broken in walking boots/thermals etc that aren’t so easy to replace as normal clothes.

Did he report it at the local airport when he landed? Were the 3 flights on an all-through ticket or booked individually?

If it was all on one booking and he reported it when he arrived, they should normally organise for the bag to be put on the earliest available route to where he is. This can however take some time, but he needs to be chasing it on his side, at the local airport. Another issue right now is how much of a mess Heathrow is due to staff shortages, so everything will annoyingly take longer than usual.

Yes reported as soon as they landed and they have been in contact regularly but they don’t know where it is - tickets all booked together. I thought it would probably be on the next flight like you say but the tracker seems to suggest that it is still in Heathrow somewhere, 4 days later.

Heathrow is an absolute mess right now so I wonder if it's that (plus usual ineptitude of the delayed luggage handlers). It sounds very annoying, I'm sorry he's going through this.

Does his insurance cover emergency purchases in case of delayed luggage? I know most things on your list aren't worth replacing, but if he needs something it's worth checking the insurance will cover a decent chunk of it. Mine goes up to a couple hundred £££ for every missing bag.
