The Baltics in a few week's time

Am I over-reacting in thinking that a trip to the Baltic countries right now is really not the best idea? Partner has a sporting trip booked for the end of the month and is still intent on going. They will be 22 km from the border with Russia and a similar distance from a known military base in the Baltic country.

I don't think life's worth living with this sort of tin hat mentality.

See ordinarily I'd be with you on that one whatsinaname2 but we stand in a situation that is the most potentially dangerous since the Cuban Missile Crisis. My thinking is that if things did go tits up, then my partner, which his British passport, in an area where there are many British Troops deployed would be just lumped in as British military. We have the Baltics deciding the no longer want Russian Oil and Gas, we have nutters on Russian TV talking about creating a land corridor to Kaliningrad - which must be state-sponsored rhetoric or it wouldn't be broadcast. It just seems crazy to go anywhere near that particular hornet's nest for a long weekend.

You seem to have it clear in your mind you shouldn't go, so don't go. Or do you want to be argued round?

mammajustkilledagnat · 04/04/2022 12:46

It's not me going, It's my partner. I think he shouldn't go, he thinks he should. I've always let him go where ever in the past but this is the first time I've said I don't think this is the best idea right now'. I'm just hoping to get some insight from others who might have more knowledge than me.

I would keep an eye on the Foreign Office travel advice for the country your partner plans to visit. Unless the Foreign Office is advising against non-essential/all travel there, I wouldn't try to talk your partner out of it if he wants to go.

I’m currently in Norway and was next to the border earlier this week and it’s all fine, calm and wonderful. The ships are still operating and unless you watch the news feel no unrest.

Until the FO state otherwise let him go,

Funnily enough, after I posted my last post my partner remembered he had sent his passport off for renewal ( it was due to run out in November and I am nagging him to get a new one now so I can book flights for Christmas). Never have I been more thankful for fuckwittery! So that solved that issue, and I have had to act all devastated for him whilst being thoroughly relieved.
