Applying for three passports with one birth certificates

Has anyone got any experience of this? I need to renew two adult passports and also get three children their first passport.
All four of the child applications are going to different passport offices, but I need to send my birth certificate with each application. I'm on a limited time frame. How do the passport offices deal with this, as it can't be the first time this has arisen?

We just had this issue with our marriage license- two kids passports, only one license. We sent it in with one and once it had been received rang the passport office to let them know if it was needed for the other child, they had it.

They were incredibly helpful and put a note on the system of the other child. They have both now been approved so obviously it must have worked!

I would just get more birth certificates but I appreciate most people would not want to pay.

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 18:15

Get more certificates, they're only 11 quid each i think

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 18:16

Plus Ive just renewed mine and didnt send in my birth cert, just my old passport

CaveMum · 03/04/2022 18:19

I sent my birth certificate off with both of my children’s birth certificates for their online application. I stuck them all in one envelope inside a plastic wallet with a covering letter with the application numbers on it. I only sent them a week ago and know they’ve been received but yet to have confirmation of receipt as I’m told that takes at least a week.

You don't need to send a birth certificate for a passport renewal. You need a parents birth certificate for a child's first passport. And I know they're only £11 but they take upwards of two weeks to arrive, unless you pay £38 for fast track, which I've just done to get one copy. I didn't think to order more at the time. 🤦‍♀️ And now the passport applications are complete and paid for, so tomorrow I need to send off our documents.

I'm on a tight schedule now, and didn't really want to pay nearly £80 for the extra certificates I'd need on the fast track service from GRO.

Not necessarily. I just applied for DS’s first passport and they didn’t require either mine or DH’s birth certificates, only our passport numbers. Got the passport back last week without issue.

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 18:38

Yes, I thought you were saying that you thought you needed them for the adult renewals as well

I would pay for the fast track and send them on to be matched up with the application. Its a one off

That's because you have a current passport. DH and mine have both expired.

My OP isn't very clear actually, sorry.

The issue is that with shelling out for travel to begin with and new passports x 6, I am a wee bit skint!

Yes they certainly arent cheap but at least its done then for some time

I dont want to worry you but at work (we apply for lots of children's passports) we often have to send the grandparents birth certs off as well, causes a lot of delay. I take it theres no risk of that?

Yes, I suppose you're right. I just wanted to make the process as speedy as possible, and also to claw back a bit of money. I'm hoping I can just call the passport office as per a PP and explain that I've sent one copy of my birth certificate and hope they can digitally share it. I'm getting stressed about it all as we're a large family and only have such a small window to sort everything until we head to the states.

Then I’m not sure I understand why you didn’t prioritise renewing yours and DHs passports, which presumably you’ll also need to do if they’re both expired? Then you wouldn’t be having to send your birth certificate for 4x individual child passports at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nitflux · 04/04/2022 04:57

I did the same as @CaveMum above. I wrote a cover letter with the details of three children applying for passports with the reference numbers of the applications, with a request to use the same documents for each one. This was on the advice of the passport office as I called them before to ask.

Monty27 · 04/04/2022 05:03

Do it online. Cross referencing application and passport numbers

Because we didn't know we'd need to travel. It's fairly last minute, but is doable if I don't have to get another two birth certificates for myself. And from the advice here it seems I don't need to do that so all will be okay.
