We're stopping off in Hamburg for a couple of days before visiting family. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to visit or areas to eat out in? We're staying about a 10 minute walk west of train station.

Visit Minatur Wonderland. Even if you have zero interest in trains, the modelling and live bits are wonderful to admire.

The Airbus factory tour at their enormous Finkenwerder plant is fascinating for anyone who has an interest in aviation or is in any way geeky. Details here :

Definitely Minatur Wunderland

They have a good chocolate museum, the guided tours in English are much quieter than the German ones!

Elb Philharmonie - you can go up it and see great views

Boat tour

Visit the port, go to Fischmarkt if up early, Tierpark Hagenbeck is a fave with the children, and me! Boat trip on the Alster. Wander along Reeperbahn, marvel at streets only for men. Football match at St Pauli.

We had a great bike ride out along river side and parkland and then came back in on the train.

Thanks for your replies which I'm going to look into.

DD is out there, she's a bit underwhelmed by Hamburg but has told us that the best place for bars is on the Reeperbahn - I know it won't all be seedy, but it doesn't appeal!
