Howies in Waterloo Place is really nice, and we also enjoyed Makars Mash Bar.

I ruled Howies out for not being special enough for a 40th! It is nice though.

Fisher's in Leith is DH's favourite. And we've had a couple of great meals in the Cafe Royal.

Fazenda or The Voodoo Rooms

I really rate Six by Nico, but you'll need to book far in advance. It's a changing menu so if you don't fancy what's on when you come, can always cancel.
Fazenda is loads of fun - it's one of those steak places where they cut the meat for you, but I'd possibly not pick it for a special birthday meal. We go there a lot because teen DS can eat his body weight in steak, but it does feel a bit buffetish for a special occasion.

If you like seafood Ondine is lovely.
Chop House on Market Street is nice and has a good buzz about it.
Timberyard is lovely.

Guildford Arms has a small upstairs restaurant. If your DH drinks beer he will love the choice available to have with his meal.

It's just off Princes Street.

The Kitchin.
Six by Nico is a chain now so I wouldn't go there.
Chez Jules is a tiny wee French place, but well known in Edinburgh and the food is great.
21212. My daughter had her engagement meal here last year and loved it.

Last year it came out that there was bullying happening in The Kitchin, and also that the owners were taking staff tips for themselves.
I'd been ten times, and absolutely can't fault the food or service, however, I'll never go back again.
Just putting it out there.

Not a fan of the Witchery at all. And the Kitchen is out for me because of the behaviour of Tom Kitchen.

Six by Nico is pretty good. It depends what type of food you like. I love Maki Ramen.

Been twice - once for a work thing, totally unimpressed but we were quite a large party so gave them the benefit of the doubt. DH and I went for a very big wedding anniversary and it was sooooo disappointing.

I had oysters Rockefeller as a starter and the oysters came topped with a splodge of uncooked bechamel and a raw spinach leaf. They should be served with a lovely, hot, bubbly spinach and cheese gratin topping. The oysters were ok after I scraped the 'rockefeller' off.

I had a steak as a main course
It was as tough as old boots (ordered rare), brought on a plate accompanied by a marrowbone sliding around the plate - really bad presentation. The sides were all extra £4 for a tiny copper pan of peas and £4 for 6 chips. Outrageous Grin.

It's all style over substance - they rely so much on the tourist market, and yes, the interiors are atmospheric, but food quality? Nope. And the wine list is massively overpriced - a wine we love, and order at a favourite local restaurant for £28, was £48 at The Witchery.

Rhubarb at Prestonfield is much better (although a little way out of town).

Absolutely loved L'Escargot Bleu - could almost imagine we were on hols in France rather than Edinburgh. Staff were super friendly. Great food and it's the first Pasture For Life Certified Restaurant in UK meaning the meat is 💯 pasture fed.

Had another lovely meal at Wedgwood.

@darlingdodo Prestonfield or Gleneagles?

I’ve booked Witchery for promotion celebration in May and am having second thoughts now…

The Lookout on Carlton Hill is very special. Wedgwood is very lovely and reliably great. Maki and Ramen is fab too, not formal though, and the Chop House in leith is nice (burgers were a bit dry though).

Gleneagles, Gleneagles or the new Edinburgh one? If Gleneagles, haven't been, but know quite a few who have and all have only good things to say. Not sure when the Edinburgh one is opening.

I like Prestonfield - has a real charm about it and the food has been superb whenever I've been.

Gleneagles Gleneagles 😂

Think you might have persuaded me. Will need to stay over. £475 🙄
