Summer Holiday - where the hell can we go that isn't going to be unbearably hot

Absolutely desperate for a summer holiday. It will be dh and I and teen ds - 17yrs (poss teen dd too but not necc as she may be travelling with a Uni friend). I'm menopausal and really sensitive to the heat so can't manage somewhere like Greece/Portugal as I think it will be too much. Would like something where there's a few bits for ds to do (he may have a friend with him). Just no idea what to do which will suit everyone's needs. Don't mind where we go. Instead of being something to look forward to it's just becoming a massive headache.
Realise this is a hugely #firstworldproblem but if anyone has any ideas that would be great. Thanks

Brittany, France? Center parcs in Belgium.or the Netherlands? Cp outside the UK is way cheaper than you'd expect with loads of teen friendly activities.

PiratePetespajamas · 25/03/2022 19:09

Finland! Get a house by a lake (TONS of them). It’ll probably have a sauna, you can swim in the lake. Fishing for the boys? On a similar note, Copenhagen also lovely and lots to do - but Finland would be more restful!

lookforthesun · 25/03/2022 19:12

South of France?

JustMaggie · 25/03/2022 19:13

Scotland! So so beautiful up there and lots of activities for teens.

RedWhiteOrBlue · 25/03/2022 19:13

You could go to Greece if you did a sailing holiday. Don't need to be a sailor as they take excellent care of you. www.sailingholidays.com/

  • Iceland (volcanoes, geysers, thermal pools and waterfalls, dramatic scenery, hiking, etc)
  • Belgium/Netherlands (Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent all lovely cities, WWI battlefields and museums)
  • Northern France (Brittany has some amazing beaches, surfing, etc, Normandy has WWII stuff, Normandy landings etc)

Came to say Austria - the lakes are wonderful. But I like the sound of Finland too!

ImInStealthMode · 25/03/2022 19:15

Jersey.

Loads of surfing / kayaking / Coasteering / cycling adventure type stuff for teens, plenty of history / scenery for you and definitely not too hot Smile

etulosba · 25/03/2022 19:22

Finland! Get a house by a lake (TONS of them).

What about mosquitos?

BeHappy91818 · 25/03/2022 19:22

Alaska?

Hbh17 · 25/03/2022 19:24

Somewhere by a lake - southern Germany (Bodensee), Switzerland or Austria.

Pinkflask · 25/03/2022 19:24

Last time I went to the South of France it was 45 degrees! It was pretty unbearable, so if it happens to be a heatwave you’re out of luck.

The Balearic Islands tend to have a nice breeze going even on hot days. I liked the climate on Ibiza very much.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/03/2022 19:25

Switzerland. Go to Grindelwald. It is stunning.

BirdOnTheWire · 25/03/2022 19:28

Cruise? We took older teens and it was perfect. Mix of sightseeing and relaxation and lots of air con. I was menopausal as well and took my trusty rechargeable fan everywhere.

Canaries are often cooler than the med in summer, especially Fuertaventura which is very windy. I've shivered on the beach there in July!

hazelnutlatte · 25/03/2022 19:29

Go to Austria - we are going to zell am see this summer, beautiful scenery and loads of outdoorsy things to do

zafferana · 25/03/2022 19:39

Switzerland is a great idea too! Grindelwald is SO pretty. Wengen too. Lovely hikes and biking trails. Is your DS outdoorsy? If so, he'd love it.

Ellmau · 25/03/2022 19:52

The Alps! Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, all gorgeous, access to activities for DS and sightseeing for you, pretty villages to wander round. Lakes for swimming.

NeedleNoodle3 · 25/03/2022 19:53

I have to avoid the sun so find cruises perfect. My DC loved them as teens. You could cruise to Norway.

feellikeanalien · 25/03/2022 19:57

You could go to the Portuguese west coast rather than the Algarve. Even in August it is much fresher but lovely during the day. The first time my late DP and I stayed there I couldn't understand why the hotel had duvets on the bed in August but the nights were distinctly cooler.

Similarly northern Spain is also lovely.

BooseysMom · 25/03/2022 20:08

We never go abroad and just go to Devon or Cornwall in a caravan ( we can't afford to be adventurous!) I hate the heat which is why the English coast suits us but last year we timed it so badly as we were away when it was a heatwave and it was too hot to walk along the coast during the hottest part of the day. This was in July. This year we're going away over Easter to avoid any heatwaves!

Riverlee · 25/03/2022 20:26

Duinrell in Holland

Raera · 25/03/2022 20:30

Madeira?

Newnormal99 · 25/03/2022 20:31

I'm going to iceland - 13 degrees I think it said!

TheBolterdahling · 25/03/2022 20:33

Northumberland

Shostaklovhich · 25/03/2022 20:43

OP don’t forget a lot of N. Europe can get very warm too. We holidayed in Netherlands a few years ago, we loved it and I can’t wait to go back, but it was right in the middle of a heatwave and the house we were staying in was definitely not designed for that kind of heat. Finland can also get very warm but a house by a lake, as pp suggested, sounds idyllic!!
