Gran Canaria, Lanzarote...or Majorca?

For a 40 year old travelling solo end of April for a long weekend.

I went to Majorca twice last year and loved it. I need to have places to see, a bit of shopping, museums etc but then I like to have a pool/beach to relax at with a cocktail and book. Majorca was perfect for this and it was easy to get around but will it be sunbathing weather then? I don't need mega hot but I also like visiting new places.

Soooo, was also considering the Canaries. I've been to Tenerife, one being a piss up holiday back in the day, the other I found myself quite bored. Weary of the wind. I'm prepared to splash out a bit.

What would you go for?

Majorca for a long weekend. I had a Tuesday-Saturday on my own in Tenerife last month and while it was amazing, the 4.5-5 hour flight time was a little too long for the time I was going for. I was basically in a mask and travelling most of Tuesday and Saturday.

Long weekend I'd do Mallorca.

Lanzarote is very interesting to explore with volcano park and amazing art galleries.

Cakesnbiscuit · 22/03/2022 18:33

Not any of the suggestions but Mexico sprang to mind. Lots of culture and history to see but the resorts are also amazing for sunbathing and food it’s epic. If your willing to splash out slightly.

Another one would be Cape Verde, slightly further south than Canary Islands but I really enjoyed that holiday, turtles, food, markets where all lovely. If you can hit the turtle breeding season definitely worth a visit.

Gran Caneria is lovely, the markets are nice and food is good. Not quite as much to do from memory but I have been back for a while

Lanzarote has plenty to offer if you're hiring a car and you like volcanic landscapes (I do, and I also like Cesar Manrique and cactuses which helped me fall in love with the place Grin). Playa Blanca is the nicest resort, with good beaches and plenty of restaurants. It's definitely not a Brits abroad kind of place.

It's a bit of a way to go for a long weekend, so if probably go to Mallorca, which I also love and can't wait to get back to this year.

Supersee · 22/03/2022 18:35

Yeah I should've considered flight times. That's also what I loved about Majorca, the flight times are great. So Majorca is winning.

Mexico is up there on destinations I'd love to go to but a little far for a long weekend!

Definitely agree with LubaLuca. It's my favourite of the ones you have mentioned, but see my earlier post re flight times.

I'm not a fan of than canaries. But they will be hotter. Mallorca is lovely. Why not go to somewhere mainland eg sitges just south of Barcelona. Very safe, very pretty , lots of single ladies go there because there is lots to do safely some very nice hotels too. Or Valencia ? That's lovely. Will be Warmer as more south

superram · 22/03/2022 18:38

I’d go to palma in Majorca or Mahon in Mallorca and lanzarote if I had more time.

I've been to Sitges! I really liked it. Travelled into Barcelona frequently. I've been to Barcelona quite a few times now. No direct flights to Valencia when I checked and expensive for the weekend I want. I'd love to go though.

I really like being beside the sea or a cove.

I would say canaries if you want sun, April won’t be particularly warm in Majorca. If you want a short flight, Alicante city is a lovely break.

TippledPink · 22/03/2022 18:50

If you don't want wind don't go to Lanzarote- it's the windiest of the Canaries! I also found it quite boring, not much landscape to look at. Currently in Tenerife and looking forward to a professional walk we are booked to go on Thursday, scenery looks amazing. How about Ibiza? It is such a beautiful island.

bellamountain · 22/03/2022 21:09

How about Menorca? Mahon is beautiful, lots of to see and do. Es Castell is up the road from there too, both have harbours with huge yachts (Mahon) or fishing boats (Es Castell), lovely restaurants and shops. Beaches in Menorca are beautiful.

youhearditherefirst · 22/03/2022 21:23

I have been to Lanzarote this year and I just don't get why people rave about it.
Maybe great for a long weekend and see the Volcanos, ride a camel, some lovely art. The place has beautiful scenery, yes, but everything else is purpose built tourism.

ivykaty44 · 22/03/2022 21:25

Been to all three and liked Majorca best

Supersee · 23/03/2022 05:13

Thanks for all the suggestions. Mallorca it is!
