Passport expiry date

Can anyone clarify for me as the stuff online is confusing.
A friend just told me that my passport will probably not be valid for travel to Europe this summer.
Passport expires January 2023 but it was issued in June 2012, with the extra months remaining at the time added on. So am I right in thinking that my passport will be out of date in June because that is 10 years from the date it was issued?

Yes, it will expire in June. Then you need to have three or six months validity left for many places, so it needs renewing asap.

Although if you renew it right now you will lose any month's remaining on it

Well it sounds like the months remaining are useless anyway. No plans to go overseas just yet but I will renew soon.
