Santorini - Flights are 3x more expensive than hotel

First time Greece visitor here. Just booking Santorini for jubilee weekend and flights are quite a bit more expensive than I expected. I've already booked accommodation, nothing fancy but a cute 3* villa for £500. But I was shocked that airline tickets on EasyJet are over £1500. Does that sound about right? I would generally rather go cheap and cheerful for airline and spend money on better hotel, but have to do the opposite this time.

Just wondering if this is normal, and any tips for Santorini for a mum and teen daughters appreciated. We'll be staying in Fira.

That is very expensive compared to precovid. But you are travelling on what will be one of the busiest weekends of the year for holidays and flight prices to popular holiday spots have gone up since covid

Wow that's expensive. It was 2 to 3 hundred a few years ago. You could always fly into Athens then get the ferry to Santorini. It costs about 40 euros and takes 5 - 6 hours. The ferries are lovely and have restaurants, coffee shops, etc. You get to see the ports of Naxos, Ios and Paros along the way. The ferry arrives in Thira so you just a taxi from right outside the ferry up the cliff to your hotel.

I mean those prices are for three people! So over £1500 for three people, sorry! 🙈

Thank you for the ferry tip. Checking that now.

Ah ok! To be fair, 500 each for peak season at short notice sounds about right. It's an expensive island.

nambind · 05/03/2022 18:21

OK if that's the case that's alright then! I was wondering if I'm making some terrible mistake

I used to get flights for around 300, but that was booking a year in advance and going back 6 or 7 years ago.

Santorini is an amazing island. I was lucky enough to live there for almost 12 years and I still miss it everyday. Have a brilliant time!

nambind · 05/03/2022 18:28

Oh this price sounds quite OK then! Also, 12 years! I'm getting so excited just looking at the pics. Can't wait to go, and even the teens are thrilled, because of all the Instagram photo opportunities Grin

I’m not surprised it’s expensive on what will be the most popular weekend of the entire year to go away. Supply and demand.

Review I thought the summer holidays would be the busiest time

Where are you flying from? Is there another airport worth checking? I'd drop it into Google flights or similar, and just see what comes up before going to the website for the best airline and booking direct.

I just tried this and it's £440 for the three of us, so added to the flights to Athens, plus transfer to Piraeus works out the same price but taking longer and with more faff. I think as people are saying it's just an expensive time of year!

From London, any airport. I've just done that and it seems to be pretty much the same

I'm going to Crete the Wednesday before the jubilee and coming back on the Sunday, my flights with Ryanair were around £450.
