Flying into and out of different countries - pyrenees

Hi, I'm considering a holiday flying into Carcassonne, spending time in the Pyrenees then a few days in Barcelona at the end before flying home from there. Does anyone have any experience of doing similar? eg recommendations where to stay, places to go in the mountains etc. Also wondering if it's a bit over ambitious in covid times to try to do it this way with all the paperwork involved (locator forms?) for 2 countries and hiring a car in one and leaving it in another, and would be grateful for any tips or advice.

Early June, didn't realise it would cost a lot more to leave car at different drop off.

Also check that a car hire company in France will allow you to take it into Spain, even if you do then return it to France. Some companies allow, some don't.

That car hire will be very expensive

There used to be a service called Frog Bus that ran from Carcasonne to Barcelona - it was cheap as chips and very easy. I once hired a car on flying into Nice, then returned home from Barcelona and it was 3 times the normal price

Thank you all, that's really helpful. I think I need to go a bit more homework!
