Gran Canaria - how much money will I need to take?

Hello,

I thought I'd post on here but does anyone know how many euros I'll need to take with me for a week holiday to Gran Canaria.

They'll be two of us going (we're in our late 20s) - we like going on excursions mainly to the zoos. Nothing too extravagant.

We're going for a week and I did self-catering because weren't sure if we'd like the food at the hotel and we'll be going out.

We don't normally drink so I'm assuming will 100 euros a day will be enough.

Also, is it better to purchase tickets for excursions before or on the day?

If anyone knows, I'll be grateful for input as never been for a week holiday abroad for two of us.

sorry dont know about excursions but you could google those. Food, drink, transport is all cheaper than here. we used buses there as they were good value and port de mogan had very limited parking. there is a boat that travels along the cost that we caught a couple of times and visit different ports

Thank you for letting me know Dreaming!

You know you can pay by card, and get money out of an ATM when you get there, don't you? you don't need to take any money with you!

caulkheaded · 21/02/2022 16:52

I’ve never taken cash with me - just used a monzo or a starling card and paid as normal or got cash out if needed. Is that an option?

Embracelife · 21/02/2022 17:04

Use bank card as in UK

Take 200 euros cash just in case you need to pay something cash

Learn some Spanish

Why would you not like hotel food?
Be prepared to try new things

The best way to make your money go further is not to eat in the tourist restaurants but head for the restaurants used by locals. Better food by miles.

We were in Ibiza for our honeymoon in September and didn't take any cash with us, just used an atm if needed as some places were card only due to covid. We spent about £800/£1000 for 2 adults for the week and that was just eating out and some activities. Heading to Gran Canaria in June with the kids (all inclusive) this time and will probably do the same. Don't want to take out too much cash incase it's a similar situation in regards to paying with card

Have a look on Viator for excursion prices and also ideas for places to visit.

Dorisslurkingfriend · 22/02/2022 12:50

We were there last week - paid €2.50 for a coffee and €3 ish for a glass of wine. Had a few lunches of tapas-y bits and drinks that came in at around €150-200 for 4 people (we didn’t stint on the ordering!). Most places apart from the ferry and the market in Mogan on Friday took cards.

Sportslady44 · 22/02/2022 14:26

take euros you pay more if you use your card.

caulkheaded · 22/02/2022 14:50

@Sportslady44

take euros you pay more if you use your card.
Depends on the card - monzo and starling, plus some credit cards don’t charge to be used abroad and they use the current exchange rate at the time.
CorrBlimeyGG · 22/02/2022 14:55

take euros you pay more if you use your card.

Often the opposite is true, especially if you have a card with no loading fee. In that case you'll be charged the visa exchange rate, which is more favourable than using an exchange in the UK.

Shdsubsh · 22/02/2022 19:54

Thanks, everyone - I do have a starling bank card so I'm assuming I can use that

If it's outside of your usual behaviour, let your bank know you'll be using your card abroad so that they don't assume it's stolen and freeze it.

Look on Money Saving Expert for advice on the best card and other tips for spending abroad.

Went to gran canaria last September and booked our excursions in advance as found them to be cheaper. We spent about £1200 between us however we did do the jet skis which were expensive and other water sports and had a few cocktails each at night. We definitely could've done it cheaper x

wishuponastar1988 · 23/02/2022 08:28

Also to add we took £400 worth of euros in cash and used bank cards whilst there. I informed my bank in advance

CraftyGin · 09/03/2022 15:54

You don't need to take more than about 20 Euros. There are bank machines on every corner and everywhere takes contactless credit cards.

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2022 16:04

Yes, that probably the best way to do it
maddy68 · 10/03/2022 16:29

Open a wise account. Cheaper than exchanging money. Don't carry cash except for the odd tenner.

maddy68 · 10/03/2022 18:41

The food is great (and cheap to eat out!). It's all part of the fun and experience

Shmithecat2 · 10/03/2022 18:45

Take a few euro in cash with you then just use your cards. And please don't go to the Zoo. Captive dolphins are not entertainment.
