Holidays with primary age kids - same destinations or different?

Is it best to go back again and again to familiar places or constantly explore new places?
When I was a child we went back many times to the same place which was great, but I think our choices were smaller back then, which they're not now.
Any thoughts?

It depends on you and your kids personalities. We like exploring and are not nervous about hoping on buses and just seeing where we end up and my kids don't really make friends easily so we just stick together and do our own thing. On the other hand when I was young we went to the same caravan on the same caravan park every year and had friends that were there who we played with and our parents socialised with. Each is good just depends which you prefer.

I actually like both OH likes familiarity but I'm more of an adventurer. Having said that, I do like going back to known decent places too, and making friends. New places carry a certain degree of risk, which is less appealing with young kids. It's such a dilemma.
