Go on a luxurious holiday in the Uk or go on a cheapie package holiday abroad?

We have 1k for a week in June for 2 adults and 2 kids and can surprisingly get a cheap week away self catering for that. Somewhere two star in somewhere like Majorca. Probably would not be too close to the beach for that price and very basic.
Or would you prefer to use the 1k and stop somewhere fairly luxurious in the UK with access to swimming pool and facilities?
Seen a gorgeous place in Derbyshire in a beautiful cottage with hot tub, fluffy dressing gowns, kids activities etc

I hate flying so trying to persuade DP to stay in Uk whereas he wants to go get some sun!

How old are the kids and what do you like doing on holiday? We had an amazing week at the Landal resort in Derbyshire. But ...we got the weather for it so there was lots of messing about in rivers. A bit of walking. Heights of Abraham, Gullivers, wandering around Bakewell, Matlock, Matlock Bath.....there was loads we didn't get to do too..... The resort had a pool and a good indoor play area. The drive from home about 90 mins to 2 hours. The accommodation had a washing machine so I didn't have loads of washing when I got home. There wad a hot tub the kids enjoyed. It was an easy holiday with good accommodation.

I think you'd struggle to find anything luxurious for 4 in the UK for a week for only £1k, unless sitting in a wind blown tent in a damp cow pasture is your idea of luxury.

KylieCharlene · 17/02/2022 06:39

I would go abroad. I'd feel like I'd had more of a holiday so to speak.

Depends on how old the dc are and if the 1k includes spends.
Do you want activities on site for the dc?

RussianSpy101 · 17/02/2022 06:56

To be completely honest; I live very near Derbyshire and it definitely isn’t a luxury holiday destination.
Go abroad.
Just to confirm though; the 1k isn’t to cover food etc as well ?

HorrocksToThem · 17/02/2022 07:04

Depends what you want from a holiday. I had a lovely holiday in Derbyshire, there were lots of walks and pretty places to visit - that's what I like doing. I'm not a sitting on the beach getting a tan type person.

ChimChimeny · 17/02/2022 07:06

Abroad for the weather! After 2 years of UK holidays I want guaranteed sun.

when you look at hotels in trip advisor they have a section with restaurants nearby and the distance, if there are a few within walking distance and you have a pool I'd definitely risk it.

ukborn · 17/02/2022 07:16

Luxury here. I'm too old to deal with things on the cheap, that's not a holiday to me, and there are beautiful places in England I've never been to.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 17/02/2022 07:33

Abroad 100% every time. The U.K. is nice, but the weather is unpredictable and it’s so expensive for what you get. Maybe June isn’t so bad, but it august you pay the same for a week in a caravan in Cornwall as we’ve paid for a week in a nice hotel in Greece, including flights!

Lots of self catering places I’d be happy with for under £1k in June if you go abroad. Lots of them right near the beach. To me it’s a no brainier.

FunnyInjury · 17/02/2022 07:35

Abroad for some nice weather!

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2022 08:05

For abroad, if you're on a tight budget, I'd look at mainland Spain, Canaries or Malta rather than Mallorca as eating out likely to be cheaper.

Maybe try Jet2holidays and look for a package with a free child place and somewhere that is in a resort town like Fuengirola that's walking distance to a supermarket as well as the beach, play parks etc and you'll not need a car and be able to use public transport if you want trips out, eg Malaga or Mijas for a change of scene.

Or somewhere where you can get flights and an apartment separately.

I'd go abroad, no question, because the weather is likely to be better. Derbyshire can bucket with rain any time of year, which for me just ruins the holiday. So yes, cheap flights and an Airbnb. We just had a cheap five days in Spain and it was lovely. There is the hassle of all the Covid bullshit paperwork though, which I can understand puts some people off.

Hairbrush123 · 18/02/2022 16:18

Definitely abroad. I spent a week in Scotland when international travel last year was possible - just not feasible (quarantining upon return unless you fancied visiting South Sandwich Island!) and while I enjoyed my trip, it didn't feel like a proper holiday! Went to Greece later in the year and I absolutely loved it. Just what I needed.

Find cheap flights and an Airbnb. Hopefully the requirement for testing will be axed by summer by countries.

CornishGem1975 · 18/02/2022 16:25

UK. I'm not bothered about the weather and I've had some dreadful experiences in places saying they are 3* in Spain and I've actually cried when I realised I had to stay there! I love the UK though and choose to holiday here a lot.

Enzbear · 18/02/2022 21:34

Abroad

shinynewapple22 · 18/02/2022 21:45

I would look at getting somewhere self catering in mainland Spain - it's a lot cheaper than Majorca . I don't know how old your DC are but I don't think I would spend £1,000 to holiday in Derbyshire - if I was travelling in UK with young children I would choose somewhere like Butlins where there are indoor activities if it was raining. But if you are able to access cheap flights then it's a cheaper holiday once you get there with the beach , swimming pool etc .

Have a look at VRBO for accommodation - you can plot exactly where your apartment is in relation to seafront , shops etc and filter on price, cancellation policy etc

lightisnotwhite · 18/02/2022 23:22

@Whohashiddenthebiscuits

Personally, I’d take the £1K, get cheapo flights to Nice, rent an AirBnB in the old town and go swim in the sea at Villefranche
Yes!
SwedishEdith · 19/02/2022 16:35

Abroad, definitely but s/c. So bored of the UK.

It's not either / or though. I'm definitely not a sit on the beach getting a tan type person at all but would rather do walks and visit pretty places abroad.
itwasntaparty · 19/02/2022 16:41

Where are you going to get somewhere luxurious in the UK for a week for 1k?! Caravans were more than that last summer, and the weather was shit. I'd go abroad.

LIZS · 19/02/2022 16:46

Wouldn't go 2 star though. Shorter, better accommodation.
