Going with DD (24) for four nights. Any recommendations for food and things to see and do?

It's a great place for a short break!

We found tons of nice restaurants by just walking round.

The Alcazaba is worth visiting as is the castle, the views from there are great.

The Roman theatre looks fabulous at nighttime.

There are tons of art museums, I enjoyed the Picasso Museum.

The seafront is nice.

The Atrazanas market has great food.

Are you staying in Malaga city itself, or one of the resorts down the coast? I've been the Malaga 3x and loved the fact is was a 'city' and a mix of locals and tourists, without the Brit abroad feel that some of the Costa del Sol resorts have.

You can get a bus direct from the airport for 3 euros each (well it was that price a 3yrs ago) to several stops in Malaga city.

Along with the suggestions from @KirkstallAbbess there is also a prommenade along the beach- so you can walk for miles either way on a conrete pathway.

There is a train in Malaga. One of my highlights was a day trip on the train to Ronda. Its a town in the mountains and has the most amazing bridge. I'm not into bridges or structures normally, but it was a a fantastic day seeing the views from the train, and seeing the most amazing bridge completed in 1793. Some lovely shops and restaurants there too.

When are you doing? In summer, they have tavernas on the beach serving freshly grilled sardines.

There is a glass museum which is fascinating

Slightly further away, and I think a bus ride, is the botanical gardens

There are plenty of shops in Malaga itself from high end to smaller independents, so if you like shopping, you will be fine

Mercado de la Merced is a collection of small, independent cafes and restaurants serving various local dishes. You might get croquettas from one place, a tortilla from another and a white wine from a 3rd. very relaxed and friendly. Our 1st time, there were people dancing tango in a nearby open space which was lovely to sit and watch

Near the Mercado is a small bar called Manana Bar. Its up a small alley way, and you might be skeptical, but they were very friendly and serve a mix of ex pats, locals and tourist with a great range of cocktails and drinks to choose from. The owners/managers are 2 brothers who are I think Latvian, but speak English and Spanish also.

Have a fabulous time.

Thank you to the above poster. Just booked Malaga for Easter so will keep an eye on this thread.

Mum5net · 15/02/2022 23:14

Yes all four nights in city area. Arrival night, Feb 26, staying in a cheaper hotel as we don’t arrive until 20.00 but in good review place days 2-4 and have room with a view.

Will definitely head for those independent cafes @Hairyfriend
and Manana Bar. We were in same area six yrs ago but never went to Malaga but did visit Ronda - yes, a lovely place now that I recall.
DD is pescatarian so there’s bound to be enough food choices
@KirkstallAbbess we will do tons of walking and try everything on your list.
Apparently the weather has been about 20 degrees recently which sounds marvellous. Now starting to get excited

We just walked and ate. I did go to the Picasso museum, the one that was his house. The centre is all tiled and pedestrianised (WHAT a difference that makes!) then you can do the more modern walkway down to the shore. That's lined with water misters (though they probably won't have switched them on yet!).

Food is fab. Copa de cava for buttons. Bloody great city.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/02/2022 23:18

We did a segway tour - was really good fun!

Downsize2021 · 15/02/2022 23:24

Oh it's fabulous! Agree with all the advice from pps

MallampatiCatty · 15/02/2022 23:25

We went in September and it was a total surprise! Alcazaba (I think free on sundays) - take the lift up, walk back down. We climbed the cathedral roof, beautiful view. There are so many beautiful streets to wander too. The Picasso museum is small but well worth a visit. We ate at a lovely sushi place I can't recall the name of but it was right next to Gran Hotel Miramar - definitely try there if you fancy a change from tapas. Yummy Helados was a brilliant vegan ice cream place. Just by the cathedral. So good. I'm not even vegan! Otherwise, enjoy the Spanish cuisine! It was absolutely lovely as a city break, hopefully you'll have a great time.

Mum5net · 15/02/2022 23:48

@Notdoingthis we booked the Hotel Valeria
What are you booking?
@Downsize2021 I think it will be, too
@MaChienEstUnDick That’s exactly my vibe and why we booked. Thank you for confirming.
@MallampatiCatty Sushi is our family favourite so we will go several times I bet
@ReviewingTheSituation Segway - ha- not for at least eight years in US but this sounds a lot easier to navigate,

We haven't booked accommodation yet but will be getting an apartment somewhere central. 3 small kids! Any tips on which travel insurance to buy? Keen to get covered for as many eventualities as possible!

SVRT19674 · 16/02/2022 14:36

Quite a few hotels have rooftop bars open to the public. You can go up to the Malaga Palacio roof bar for drinks and the views are spectacular. Something not mentioned is gardens, like the Jardines de la Concepción, well worth a visit, middle to end of the 19th century gardens and house. I always take a walk in the harbour and the stall market and get some drinks there. I can also recommend a "bodega" (traditional winery) like El Pimpi (in Calle Granada), you can also get tapas and other foods there. I also enjoy the Thyssen Museum and away from the city centre you have the Hermitage Russian Museum and the Automobile Museum, both great.

waytheleaveswork · 16/02/2022 14:40

Hammam Al Ándalus Baños Árabes Málaga

Would recommend this Turkish spa. Right in the centre. You can buy day passes but it does book up quickly. Sorry not sure how to post a link!

Have a fabulous time!

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/02/2022 14:45

Casa Lola for tapas for lunch - you can't book though.

Notdoingthis · 16/02/2022 14:48

Brilliant thread, thank you.

JustJam4Tea · 16/02/2022 14:50

We loved it, basically ate fantastic tapas in great bars and had a whale of a time for a long weekend.

Mum5net · 16/02/2022 18:11

@SVRT19674 I'm going to roof bar surf I think!
That's a magnificent idea
Maybe I can research on google earth.
@waytheleaveswork A Turkish Spa, this just gets better and better Grin
DD going to google that, too and book. Need to work out however, what time in the day is best. We might be too full of tapas and wine
to get the benefit Grin
@WeAreTheHeroes we will look and see where that is located and put Casa Lola on the list
@JustJam4Tea Yes, it sounds just what we need to do - chill, eat and sip

We liked it - the city beach is shit, more like dirt than sand but it's a lovely little city, loads of great places to eat. Walk up to the Castillo de Gibralfaro for amazing views of the whole city. We had pinchos for lunch in Casa Lola that was a lot of fun but very touristy! our favourite meal was at Blossom though - Argentine chef and just fab.

MrsFezziwig · 16/02/2022 19:02

@ReviewingTheSituation

We did a segway tour - was really good fun!
First time ever on a Segway - I always wanted to try it but couldn’t believe how much fun it actually was! I did the tour which takes you up the hill to the Mirador del Gibralfaro - no effort required, whizzing past the people slogging up on foot, then an amazing view right down the coast at the top.

I love Malaga city, haven’t been for several years (I slightly transferred my affections to Valencia Blush) I need to go back!

WouldIBeATwat · 16/02/2022 19:08

Following as I’m going for a solo trip in a few months. 🎉

Hairyfriend · 16/02/2022 20:06

@Notdoingthis- We stayed at this apartment a few years ago. They have multiple apartments/rooms/sizes etc. Very close to the large fresh food market (Atarazanas) and short walk to El Cortes Ingles and an even cheaper Lidl. It also wasn't far from the 3 euro each airport bus drop off point.

Notdoingthis · 16/02/2022 20:20

Which apartment sorry?

Hairyfriend · 16/02/2022 20:27

Notdoingthis · 16/02/2022 20:49

Looks amazing, thanks. Sadly fully booked for our dates.

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/02/2022 21:45

We stayed near there in an Airbnb apartment. El Corte Ingles has a rooftop terrace with great views and a bar/cafe. The staff were a bit sniffy though when we went there.
