European River cruise

We've never been on a cruise before but I was thinking it might be nice to try a river cruise on the Danube or Rhine. It would be me, DH and 15yo dd who is very keen. I'm thinking 5-8 days in the summer holidays.

Has anyone been on one they can recommend? I would love to see Vienna and Budapest but that's not essential.

@MallampatiCatty that sounds like a wonderful trip. I need to brush up on my European geography and check out the seat61 website!

In Vienna we stayed here - they have different sized apartments. Handy with keycode entry. There were shops nearby and a lovely bakers downstairs. It was between the Prater and the city centre but really handy for public transport - tram/metro nearby. We bought a 2 day pass when we arrived at the central station. Washing machine and dryer in the shared space with free products, but you got your own ironing board etc. The terrace was really nice.

In Bratislava we stayed here in a 2 bed apartment with balcony. It's a 10 minute walk to the old town via an underpass. And near the Cat Cafe! We had a bit of faff following instructions from the station but on the way back discovered that Bratislava has Uber and it cost 2.50 to get back. We did a city tour in a little open topped mini bus. Lots of lovely squares, bars and restaurants. Its almost like a mini-Prague in some ways without the hordes and stag nights.

We then stayed in Seefeld in Tirol and Munich on the way back to Brussels. I love Munich.

@MallampatiCatty

We're doing Ljubljana to Nuremberg via train in the summer, with 3 nights in Ljubljana, 3 nights in Salzburg, 2 in Munich and 2 in Nuremberg. Seat61 is a fabulous website for train journeys + advice! Would definitely recommend Budapest to Vienna but there are many options for you to explore!

What a great trip! Ljubljana is an amazing city, as is the rest of Slovenia. If you've not been there before, you'll love it.

@CampervanQueen thank you! We are very excited and have heard wonderful things about Slovenia. The direct train between Ljubljana and Salzburg was a great surprise.

Jumping on here with a question about river cruises:
We've just been to Budapest and had a good nosey at the river cruise ships. We saw some 'parking' but how do passengers get off the ship? Do you need to cross over another boat if not directly next to the gangway thing? Some were parked 3 or 4 abreast?
Also could you choose to stay on the ship when docked or not?

If your boat is not on the dock side you walk over the ships but there is a designated path way and you are guided, we never had to go down any stairs.
We were able to stay on the ship all the time if we wanted to.

You are very successfully selling me on Budapest / Vienna combo. Off to Google trains and hotels!

I was just about to suggest this combo too. Budapest is my all time favourite city. Wouldn't recommend river cruises for youngster.
