Is Anywhere in the canaries not naff?

Fancy a break with my pal in May. All we need is a pool. A walk or two. Nice restaurants. Not bothered about super luxury hotels or anything

I’ve never thought of the canaries but imagine they’re all. Boozy or all inclusive ?

Of course they’re not all like that. Obvs there will be the party hot spots like anywhere, so avoid Playa de Las americas etc but there are many other resorts to choose from.

Geranium1984 · 13/02/2022 13:16

Palma, Vallencia or somewhere in Puglia?
Never been to the canaries. I'm also worried about it being too brits abroad 😅

FebruaryFest · 13/02/2022 13:16

I have a very fussy (snobby?!) relative who raved about Lanzarote.😂🤷

bruffin · 13/02/2022 13:17

Don't know , never been to Spain but going to All Inclusive in Fuetuventura on Saturday. We don't normally do this type of holiday We are going to hire a car so going out for a few days.

Hoppinggreen · 13/02/2022 13:17

We went to Lanzarote a few years ago. It was suggested by family and we were going with them. It very much wasn’t the type of holiday me and DH usually went on and we were a bit snotty about it - calling it Lanzagrotty etc
We actually had a lovely time and thought it was beautiful. We hired a car and got out and about a bit but we were very surprised at how nice it was

RussianSpy101 · 13/02/2022 13:18

Yes depending on your budget.

Knobhead101 · 13/02/2022 13:19

There's a lovely place in Gran Canaria called Meloneras. Nice area, slightly upmarket but not snobby, a range of hotels under the Lopesan group, I've stayed in the Lopesan Baobab and it's fantastic. Highly recommend! Oh

TeenPlusCat · 13/02/2022 13:21

Lanzarote Playa Blanca Princess Yaiza

Playa Blanca has a lovely promenade with a variety of restaurants.
Hire a car for a couple of days and tour round. Lunch up Timanfaya is fun, plus lunch in Orzola in the North.

hellswelshy · 13/02/2022 13:22

Yes recently went to Lanzarote also, just me and dh, very surprised how much I enjoyed it! We stayed in Aequora Suites in Puerto del Carmen which was very nice - this area is great for walking if you like to walk on the flat like me! Lots of nice looking hotels we passed on the sea front too, and had lots of restaurants and a very pretty stretch of beach.

hilbil21 · 13/02/2022 13:22

Caleta de fuste in fuertaventura is nice.

FredBair · 13/02/2022 13:23

Of course there are plenty of places, you can't write off the whole of the Canaries as naff.
I've been to all the islands and you can find everything from secluded luxury hotels to cheap brits abroad resorts.

Hugasauras · 13/02/2022 13:24

Another vote for Meloneras. We've been there a few times. Nice promenade with restaurants, attracts an older crowd, not boozy at all. Feels v different to Maspalomas even though it's just next door. We like the Riu there.

RachHen · 13/02/2022 13:25

Ooh thanks everytime.
Meloneras sounds nice

We went to Lanzarote a few years back, had a beautiful villa with pool hired a car, you can drive all over the island very easily, lots of it is very beautiful. We took ourselves around a few locations with Manrique sculptures, the home he designed etc, went to the volcanic national park, Arrecife is a nice small town and we saw a great local parade there with traditional costumes and music as well as a nice food market, I forget what the national holiday was. We also like to dive and there is a diving spot with underwater sculptures which was really cool. We also went to a vineyard and did a wine tasting, it's quite a different way to grow grapes due to the volcanic soil, the very pale rosè was surprisingly good. Had some really nice seafood and there were a couple of really good steak restaurants.
Just avoid the busier resorts, it's like saying the whole of Greece is a no go because of Malia or Faliraki....
I'd go again for a quiet relaxed holiday. We tend towards the more adventurous, but it was a really lovely winter break.

Hugasauras · 13/02/2022 13:28

Puerto de Mogan might be worth a look too although it tends to be more self-catering.

CampervanQueen · 13/02/2022 13:29

I've done Lanzarote twice and stayed well away from the touristy areas, in a small village called Uga. Hired a car both times and toured all the sites already mentioned. It's a lovely place to visit and there's plenty to see and do.

The local wine is indeed lovely, especially the rose already mentioned!

Costa adeji in Tenerife is really nice- not boozy at all. A lot of the hotel won't offer all inclusive. It's really nice

girlmom21 · 13/02/2022 13:34

Fuerteventura is much quieter than Lanzarote.

Elba Sara is nice.

NewLaptop · 13/02/2022 13:36

Have a look at Puerto de la Cruz, north side of Tenerife. Nice town feel. We went a few years ago having never bothered for same reasons as you. Found Tenerife absolutely stunning. We spent two long days just exploring the volcano (which is pretty much of inland Tenerife). Dont stay in the South though. That's exactly what you don't want.

WhatHaveIDone21 · 13/02/2022 13:37

I agree with @TeenPlusCat

We have been to Princess Yaiza a couple of times and it is lovely. Lots of nice restaurants on the prom just outside the hotel.

Gosh is this for real??? Shock you call a place naff and dismiss it as "boozy and all inclusive" after saying that your main requirement is a pool?

My main memories of the place were how beautiful, unspoilt and unique nature was. Sounds like it might not be a good fit for what you're after.

Alternatively try doing your own research. Other people on the internet might not agree with you about what naff means.

Branleuse · 13/02/2022 13:39

Try northern Tenerife. We stayed on a banana plantation in Garachico which was such a brilliant holiday.
South tenerife is very brits-abroad but the north has a very different vibe

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 13/02/2022 13:39

La Gomera is posh. In that, there isn't much really for kids and you go there to do hill trekking.

Sparkletastic · 13/02/2022 13:40

Lanzarote is stunning with many fantastic restaurants and interesting / cultural things to see and do.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 13/02/2022 13:49

Fuerteventura is lovely and definitely nothing like grand canaria or tenerife!
