Is Anywhere in the canaries not naff?

Fancy a break with my pal in May. All we need is a pool. A walk or two. Nice restaurants. Not bothered about super luxury hotels or anything

I’ve never thought of the canaries but imagine they’re all. Boozy or all inclusive ?

Tenerife - peurto de La Cruz or los gigantes.

Or go to La Gomera to completely avoid the touristy vibe.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/02/2022 13:55

There are some of the finest hotels in Europe in Costa Adeje Tenerife, that is if your budget stretches that far. They are definately not naff!

gogohm · 13/02/2022 13:55

It's fine in fuerterentura (which I can't spell today) it has exactly what you want. We did opt for ai and there was no drunkenness U.K. be honest, clients from across Europe, English and German made up the bulk. TUI magic life. Not that posh but pool, few options included for dinner and drinks too. On bus route if you want to go exploring

@bruffin

Don't know , never been to Spain but going to All Inclusive in Fuetuventura on Saturday. We don't normally do this type of holiday We are going to hire a car so going out for a few days.
I went to a hotel in the south of Fuerteventura with my parents and young DC. We're Irish. there were hardly any Irish or English people there. It was mostly older germans Dutch and Danish people. It was quite 'staid' in the energy. No shrieking, no fights over sun beds, no puddles of puke. People were keen to practice their English on me! Hadn't expected that.

The zoo is nice!

Jemimapuddleduk · 13/02/2022 14:08

We love Lanzarote. We still in a villa in playa blanca and have been about 6 times. So many fab places to eat.

bruffin · 13/02/2022 14:15

@mUserBot9to5 and @gogohm
Think we are staying next to TUI Magic life in the South.

tunainatin · 13/02/2022 14:16

Many parts of northern tenerife are gorgeous and not touristy at all.

ReadingIsFundamental · 13/02/2022 14:27

I agree with the comments about Meloneras in Gran Canaria - we stayed at Lopesan Costa Meloneras and loved it. It had a very mixed European clientele - Spanish, German, Dutch as well as British and Irish. There were 7 pools so the pools never felt crowded. Food was great too. We’d go back in a heartbeat but it’d be the 3rd time and really feel we should explore new places!
We also stayed on the Costa Adeji and I’d recommend staying close to the Playa del Duque - lots of upmarket hotels and restaurants.

Iamthedom · 13/02/2022 14:29

Meloneras In GC is posh and upmarket I’ve stayed at the lopesan babob twice
beautiful hotel
Amadore in GC - is also nice
The Gloria palace hotel is beautiful Set in the cliff overlooking the sea
I’m off to Costa Adeje on Tuesday which is a nice part of Tenerife
I went to Lanzarote in Oct and stayed in Costa Teguise which was nice for a chill out holiday

Flyingbymypants · 13/02/2022 14:35

La Caleta Tenerife and Puerto de Mogan Gran Canaria

simbobs · 13/02/2022 14:38

Just avoid Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos in Tenerife and you will be fine. We've been to several islands in the Canaries always stayed in an apartment. There are pools with loungers in many places where you pay for the day.

skeemee · 13/02/2022 14:44

We went to the Radisson Blu in Puerto Mogan a couple of years ago. Nice place, dubbed “Little Venice” because of the canals. Not naff or boozy brits in the slightest.

Like a op, I also had preconceived ideas about Lanzagrotty when we first went 20+ years ago. Was pleasantly surprised and have visited all of the islands regularly since.

Avoid Playa de las Americas and Playa del Ingles. These are the most touristy and built up.

We are going to Los Gigantes next. Never been, but looks quite picturesque ☀️

Fedupbuyer · 13/02/2022 14:46

I am quite snobby with holidays but absolutely love Lanzarote!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 13/02/2022 14:55

We stay at the Royal Sun suites in Los Gigantes, Tenerife. It is up a hill from the main town so is very quiet and has amazing views. Rooms are large with big balconies, they come with a kitchenette, reasonable priced shop on site with fresh bread cooked everyday. There are two restaurants, one buffet style and one more formal or you can have room service. We book with TUi and go half board but charge drinks, ice creams etc to the room which are very reasonably priced 3 of us multiple cocktails/mock tails and lots of ice cream each day cost £150 for 14 nights. You can book independently and there is a secure car park on site, gym and a bus station at the bottom of the hill going to the rest of the island. The town itself has a marina with boats going out for dolphin and whale trips, a couple of supermarkets, lots of restaurants and a lovely little black sanded beach.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 13/02/2022 15:00

@skeemee you will love Los Gigantes, the cliffs are spectacular, the beach is tucked away but has great snorkeling so make sure you take some. There is a rocky beach too but the locals at our hotel said a aid it as it can be dangerous. Go on the Pirate ship if you do a boat trip and have children it's brilliant and they can swing off the trapeze into the Ocean.

midsomermurderess · 13/02/2022 15:03

La Gomera does have a tourist vibe, an older, if you like bohemian, largely German tourist vibe with a scattering of mostly middle-aged British walkers. The main resort town is Valle Gran Rey, a dull, low-rise resort of mediocre restaurants and hobby cafes where you'll wait 30 minutes for a simple coffee. It's a long old drive there and a long old haul out. It was a thoroughly underwhelming destination all round. Having said that, San Sebastián I quite liked.

HelloDulling · 13/02/2022 15:03

Inland Lanzarote is beautiful. The resorts are all on the coast, but head inland, just a little way, and you’ll find lovely places. Look at Finca Malvasia, it’s really gorgeous.

CottonSock · 13/02/2022 15:06

I was surprised by lanzarote and the interesting architecture and lack of high rise etc. Not green enough for me though. I loved Northern Tenerife.

thinkfast · 13/02/2022 15:10

Northern part of lanzarote might fit your bill.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 13/02/2022 15:12

Currently sitting on a sunlounger at Radisson Blu in Mogan, it's lovely! We're on half board. There's a quiet pool and a family pool, we're at the quiet one and it's peaceful. The hotel food is nice, and we're off to try the restaurants in the village later. It's warm, not too windy and very relaxing. Definitely not a boozy vibe.

NoLongerTroels · 13/02/2022 15:22

We stayed in Meloneras one time and loved it. I aways liked Mogan too, and usually go for the day when we are in Gran Canaria

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/02/2022 16:24

We went to Tenerife for the first time the year before COVID. Thought we'd made a mistake when the bus drove us from the airport. Some parts were very grotty. But then it dropped us off in our resort, Costa Adeje near the Playa del Duque. Very nice indeed! We loved the walk to Caleta which is a nearby fishing village. Loved our trip up the volcano (but would take a car next time so we could explore the whole area ourselves). It was a fascinating landscape. If we go back we're going to visit the north too.

I really want to go here:

Looks amazing. Very Lost World.

Have been thinking of going there for a while. What is San Sebastián like?
midsomermurderess · 13/02/2022 16:55

It's where you arrive on the ferry. It's a small place but I liked the feel of it. It's a little working town. Valle Gran Rey on the other hand felt like a sort of retirement home to me. One one side there are a bunch of mediocre restraints, on the other, badly-run rather amateur cafes with terrible service. Some of the island is very beautiful with stunning views and good if walking is your thing. I just found it a bit dull and while it's tiny, it takes ages to get anywhere. I much prefer Madeira. Not the most exciting of places either I suppose but I found there was much more to do.

Roselilly36 · 13/02/2022 18:58

I love Lanzarote, been many times, would recommend.
