If so what’s the best way to travel around on a budget?

You’ll probably want a car. What island are you going to and what are you hoping to do/where do you want to go?

I know nothing about The Azores - so no clue which island to head for - would like to travel place to place - see as much nature as possible - more off the beaten track experiences. Not interested in beach resorts or towns really - love coastal walks and gentle mountain hikes

Well São Miguel is the largest island and has direct flights from the UK. I’m not sure you can get to the other islands direct, you’d need to change - but something to research. You could look at buses but I suspect you’d be really limited. We hired a car. A car meant we were able to explore the island and visit various beauty spots, went whale watching, hiking, to the hot springs etc.

Really loved the Azores and would recommend doing some research to work out what you want to do, and how best to do it.

We went to the main island and walked, saw the botanic gardens, there's lots of waterfalls and sections where the sea is warm! Each island has its own identity but inter islands flights made it impossible for us to do, cost wise. Really really enjoyed it and swam with dolphins in the wild. This was back in 2019. I hired a car for most of the time to get around. The island is small so easy to navigate with your phone or a basic map. Did it with airbnb.
