Please

We went in July 2001, so prob a bit more touristy now.
Weather was nice and warm, not scorching but enough to swim in lake. Prague however was choc a bloc full, mainly big parties of Americans and japanese. Would recommend maybe a night or too there and then get out!!
We went down to South - West, Csesky Krumlov, near Austrian border - was beautiful, rolling hills, forests, fairy tale castles. Think there are a few such areas. We travelled by train which was very cheap and very slow!
Food and beer very cheap then, though very meat and potatoe based - no good for vegetarians.
We did find that outside Prague, people didn't tend to speak English - where we were, their second language was German (not a prob for us as I speak German) and I think a lot still speak Russian too. However, this may have changed snce then. People were very friendly and hospitable too.
Hope this helps and maybe someone will have more recent experience! It was one of our best holidays.

we can't be the only people who are considering the czech republic for a summer holiday.

Mind you, Czech Airlines was an intersting experience...

Hulababy · 30/12/2007 22:23

Really? The flights coming up so far are with Czech Airlines? Why so interesting?!

purplejennyrose · 30/12/2007 22:40

Umm...rather bumpy old plane, all looked 'well-used'...passengers who looked a bit like Russian mafia...hilarious translations of safety info etc.
Come to think of it, we came across lots of hilarious translations - we picked our B+B (which was dirt cheap, luxurious and with the biggest continental breakfasts you have ever seen!) partly because it offered hospitality to 'friends from an animal realm'...
Ahh, I'm getting nostalgic..

Hulababy · 30/12/2007 22:42

Hmm - wonder if they have updated those planes yet!

Found a few rather lovely villas a few kilometres out of Prague. Have just sent for further details of one which is 55km from Prague that looks wonderful - large and spacious, enclosed private garden, indoor pool with jacuzzi feature and a sliding roof for warm weather use, steam room and saunda in villa, - it looks and sounds great!

Anyone else been?

oxocube · 31/12/2007 10:40

Been to Prague - was warm, hotel was an absolute fright, very basic and def not as described but quite a laugh. Very beautiful city, although we ended up exploring its seedier parts. I seem to remember 2 women having a vicious fight in a bar . Ditto the planes. Went without kids so can't comment on suitability for family holiday but this was 10 years ago!
