Open plan bathrooms in hotel rooms - UGH

So looking to go to Tenerife in October with DH, DS16 and his pal also 16.
Thought I'd found a perfect hotel, only to find that the bathroom HAS NO DOOR OR WALL Confused. This is a newly decorated room in a 5 star hotel, so assume it's the new thing.

But who on earth wants to see their DP doing their ablutions, never mind if it's not actually your Significant Other you were sharing with ? DH and I were discussing it and even if you were on your own we'd want a separate room to contain the toilet smells from the rest of the room.

Has anyone else encountered this? Tis very annoying as the hotel was perfect in all other respects ,but I'm now back to the drawing board.
@user1471550643 they didn't think that one through did they Grin?
The ironic thing is there are so many more places in this room with space for it … it’s a shame as it’s a lovely hotel .. but I definitely won’t be coming back with guests 😂

Why is the bath so close to the bed?! This belongs in the Facebook group “Bathrooms With Threatening Auras”

Yep, went to Lanzarote a few months back, with dh and our hotel had this. Was not for us! We had to wear headphones or go on the balcony to preserve each other's dignity Grin

Hate this trend. I stayed in The Pod 39 in NYC a couple years ago with a friend; budget place with a hostel feel and bunk beds. But this was the bathroom. The middle was frosted but you could see straight through if you stood up or were on the top bunk. And it was a really tiny room so there wasn't anywhere else to sit and be out of sight. One of us left the room when the other needed the toilet. Why not just frost the entire door?!

@Ozanj

It’s not a ‘fashion’ this is the proper way to build ensuites in really hot climates - otherwise you would get rot / bugs festering in the bathroom.

I guess EVERYONE in my tropical, on-the-equator home country is doing their en suites wrong, walls and doors are definitely a thing. We have louvred windows that are always open, many other homes have bricks with holes in them so that there is a constant air flow, something like this. Both of these are at the tops of the walls so that no one on the outside can see in

I am actually in something similar tonight . On my own thankfully. This has a frosted glass door, however the positioning of the mirror outside the bathroom means when on the bed you would clearly see your room mate sat on the toilet

Having flashbacks to an awful business trip to LA where we were put in twin rooms with colleagues.

The hotel was refitted between booking and our arrival with a similar set up. Was awkward indeed.

I did have a good chat with the Jet 2 lady about it this afternoon. She said she'd had similar in Mexico but her main cause for complaint was no sink in the toilet cubicle bit.

Seems a bizarre craze, shame really as now DS is older DH and I could be looking at hotels rather than apartments, but not if its a bedroom/bathroom combo.

This is totally normal in lots of great hotels now - I like it! As long as the loo is separate I don’t see the issue

That’s just nasty. I wouldn’t even want that with just DH. The loo door doesn’t seem to go all the way up, the smells and the sounds, not romantic at all😫

The shower wouldn’t bother me unless it was a family room but the loo, that’s private for me!

I stayed in a crap hotel in Tignes where the "bathroom" was basically a shower, sink and toilet in a glass cubicle at one side of the room with a curtain you could pull across for "privacy", and a sliding door that wouldn't stay closed or lock. The cubicle walls didnt reach the ceiling and the extractor fan was v noisy but at least it masked the noise of exH having a leisurely shit, morning and evening.

Why do you like it? Honestly cannot fathom the benefits

I've experienced this a few times, the cruise was the most interesting- shutters that opened (so could have privacy) so you can see the sea whilst bathing though as it was December in the English Channel I preferred not to see the driving rainGrin

@Exhausteddog

If these are 5* hotels, is privacy a poor people's thing? Premier inn always has doors and walls for their bathrooms!🤣

I had to laugh at this. Several years ago a young cousin and his mate stayed in a really cheap B&B in Bridlington. They were both appalled to find that the toilet was conveniently placed in the corner of the room but screened with a lovely shower curtain .

@rookiemere they say frosted but based on my last experience they are still see through. I used the loo in the reception. Even h who does normally care commented it was weird. I pulled the curtain divider across to use the bath / sink .

I can’t help thinking in terms of hygiene it’s not good. The flush spraying out poo crumbs over the bed linen.

Grin

Exactly. No thank you. All poos in a fully enclosed space please.

I've never come across this before, but it reminds me of this bad dream I keep having where I'm visiting someone's house and the only toilet is situated in the middle of the living room Blush

Hate them, don’t care if they’re made of copper or bloody diamonds. Want privacy. Go somewhere else.
Whoever thought this idea up was 20 and perfect Grin.

Good god! Is a lavatory in a bedroom a thing now, too?

I stayed at Hotel Hospes Madrid and the bathroom and toilet are open plan such that you are completely on show when in use. I was fortunate that I was travelling with dd but we saw other people in reception enquiring about rooms with a separate bathroom.

I went to Dom rep with family for a wedding. The decision was almost made for me to take a family room with my parents but I insisted on paying for my own room cos I can't stand my dad's snoring. Thank god!!! The shower cubicle looked onto the bedroom with frosted glass and of course whilst you can't see detail you can see enough!! Can you imagine showering with your dad in the room, having to ask him to turn away. Would of made the whole trip a horrible experience.

Also in some restaurants in Prague, I've walked into toilets with frosted glass, again not in detail but you can tell a woman is sitting down, pants around her legs, getting up, clearing wiping motion. Eugh why!!!

@rookiemere what about Dreams Lanzarote, that's got proper bathrooms! Or Princesa Yaiza.

I've seen quite a few with a glass window between the bedroom and bathroom, but always with a blind you can move down for privacy. Totally open plan like the Tacande is just plain weird, especially as they weren't like that originally so they've gone to the effort of knocking out walls during the refurb.
