Open plan bathrooms in hotel rooms - UGH

So looking to go to Tenerife in October with DH, DS16 and his pal also 16.
Thought I'd found a perfect hotel, only to find that the bathroom HAS NO DOOR OR WALL Confused. This is a newly decorated room in a 5 star hotel, so assume it's the new thing.

But who on earth wants to see their DP doing their ablutions, never mind if it's not actually your Significant Other you were sharing with ? DH and I were discussing it and even if you were on your own we'd want a separate room to contain the toilet smells from the rest of the room.

Has anyone else encountered this? Tis very annoying as the hotel was perfect in all other respects ,but I'm now back to the drawing board.

I would also be concerned about damp in the bedroom from the shower or bath creating a cloud of steam. Who wants damp bedding and clothes?

Exhausteddog · 31/01/2022 14:03

I once shared a room with an exhibitionist who would leave the bathroom door open when she was naked on the toilet. She would have loved this modern room arrangement.
My (late) MIL was a bit like this. Neither she or FIL always closed the door when they were in the bathroom, or getting dressed Blush

Ozanj · 31/01/2022 14:05

It’s not a ‘fashion’ this is the proper way to build ensuites in really hot climates - otherwise you would get rot / bugs festering in the bathroom.

Cuck00soup · 31/01/2022 14:05

@Clymene

This is just cost saving dressed up as modern

This!

I expect they'll dress it up as customer choice though.

That explains why they do it on Oxford then, well known for hot humid weather!
RosiePosieDozy · 31/01/2022 14:08

Ugh. Not my cup of tea. No privacy, toilet smells, hygiene and shower steam around the room.

If I really loved the hotel, I would still book it though. Not ideal but you could leave the room when the other is using the facilities.

rookiemere · 31/01/2022 14:13

@RosiePosieDozy I think it may be possible to request a more normal bathroom. I might ring up Jet 2 and see what they say.

@BruceAndNosh

Never has a "Comfort Room" been so inaccurately named. It should be a Discomfort Room.
Lol!!
Emanchego · 31/01/2022 14:22

Just pay a bit more for a better hotel 💁‍♀️

rookiemere · 31/01/2022 14:25

@Emanchego these are the 5 star luxury hotels and aren't exactly cheap.

And yet I've stayed in hotels in really hot climates for 30 years and never had an open bathroom
ElftonWednesday · 31/01/2022 14:35

I can't understand them doing this, it would seem to alienate so many customers, so even if it's a cost-saving it won't be if you lose business because of it. Even many couples are not happy with this, and loads of people travelling and sharing a room are other family or friends who definitely want bathroom privacy. I hope they get loads of shitty reviews.

justasking111 · 31/01/2022 14:41

We had this glass wall wet room with bath, shower loo,. Someone had to take a walk while the other one abluted

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/01/2022 14:52

DH stayed in a hotel in the uk for work. He rang up to tell me. Double room, shower and toilet all open plan. I said you are in your own so what’s the issue? He said well what if someone walks in like the housekeeper and I’m on the toilet. He said it was right by the door. So anyone walking in the toilet was the first thing they saw.

I can’t help thinking in terms of hygiene it’s not good. The flush spraying out poo crumbs over the bed linen.

PriamFarrl · 31/01/2022 15:02

I stayed in a hotel in Germany where the shower, sink and toilets were all cubicles set next to each other. There was one sliding door that either covered the toilet or the shower.
The shower was glass, clear, and right next to the bed.

NatriumChloride · 31/01/2022 15:04

Oh my. I just checked out the link you posted and it’s bloody awful! I’d hate to stay in a place like that, even if it’s just me and DH!

Abracadabra12345 · 31/01/2022 15:35

@rookiemere

When I have a bath on holiday it's so I can totally relax in solitude. Not have DH yapping at me or getting ideas because I'm naked in water.
Absolutely !
rookiemere · 31/01/2022 15:48

Now looking at 4 star hotel in Lanzarote as it has guaranteed separate bathrooms Grinso much for 5 star luxury.

We stayed in a lovely hotel in Barcelona years ago, that had a dark glass wall / door separating the bathroom and bedroom. Why? I think the toilet was in an alcove but it did not have the kind of soundproofing I would want!

A few years before that DH and I stayed in a "hotel" in El Salvador. The toilet was behind a shower curtain just by the head of the bed ConfusedEnvy. Absolutely no bowel movements were allowed in that room Grin

BonkMyPop · 31/01/2022 19:08

We had something similar on our honeymoon in 2015, it was partitioned but the toilet door was glass. I got the poops half way through and had to ask my DH to kindly go hang out in the lobby until I got it under control 😂

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2022 19:14

Oh come on, it's not as bad as OP originally made out. Wouldn't bother me.

Clymene · 31/01/2022 19:20

Do you think it would bother 2 16 year old boys sharing though? Or a family?

There's no way my kids would take a shower in a room where the rest of the family could see them naked. I guess they could do that weird under towel shuffle you do on the beach. Maybe they're expecting all guests to bring dry robes

user1471550643 · 31/01/2022 19:23

I am actually in something similar tonight . On my own thankfully. This has a frosted glass door, however the positioning of the mirror outside the bathroom means when on the bed you would clearly see your room mate sat on the toilet

@BonkMyPop nothing screams romance as much as hearing and smelling your spouses bowel movements.

@user1471550643 they didn't think that one through did they Grin?
