Open plan bathrooms in hotel rooms - UGH

So looking to go to Tenerife in October with DH, DS16 and his pal also 16.
Thought I'd found a perfect hotel, only to find that the bathroom HAS NO DOOR OR WALL Confused. This is a newly decorated room in a 5 star hotel, so assume it's the new thing.

But who on earth wants to see their DP doing their ablutions, never mind if it's not actually your Significant Other you were sharing with ? DH and I were discussing it and even if you were on your own we'd want a separate room to contain the toilet smells from the rest of the room.

Has anyone else encountered this? Tis very annoying as the hotel was perfect in all other respects ,but I'm now back to the drawing board.

@WhatsitWiggle Jet2 because we're regional so not a lot of choice company wise, plus a lot of people said they were really good about cancellations and refunds during the pandemic.

Ah fab news - I hope it's everything you want! So hard giving recommendations as everyone is different.

Which company have you booked with, if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry not reaf the full thread....but the bath in the room is in the Gold rooms....the cheaper rooms have a bathroom. Or that's how I read it.

@WhatsitWiggle please let your friend know that we booked Seaside Jameos. It had everything we wanted when I looked at it and price wise seemed reasonable for what you got.Oh and totally normal enclosed bathrooms! Now I just have to hope they don't refurb before October Grin.

Thank you @WhatsitWiggle I feel like I'm drowning in a sea of holiday accommodation and every time I get one that looks good either the pools not heated in October, they can't guarantee twin beds for the boys or they have toilets and showers of shame! So it's great to have a personal recommendation.

@rookiemere I've not been, but my colleague said "it's bang in the middle of Playa Blanca and on the beach promenade. Refurbished in 2020. I don't like the building itself ... 70s style concrete block". She's also suggested Seaside Los Jameos Playa in Puerto del Carmen which is livelier than Playa Blanca and is one of her favourites with more activities, nice pool area, great service and food.

Looking at the Dreams, it may have been the location putting you off, it's not central Playa Blanca so you don't have loads around the hotel.

I know my 15 year old would think it was mortifying. The 12 year old possibly not so much.(He's away with the fairies half the time and probably wouldn't notice 🤣) I think DH would happily shower or get dressed with an audience but he would draw the line at going to the loo in front of others.

@DillDanding

The toilet is separate though? I think it looks lovely.

It's separate but the door doesn't reach to the floor or ceiling, which is just not acceptable IMO.

I have also asked the teens in my house and they were a hard no (I think they were more horrified than I was) Grin

Is it a Spanish thing? Do we have to stop going to Spain? ShockShock

I know @StevieNicksscarf it does make me feel old, but then 15 year old DS was horrified by the concept of having to shower or poo in front of his pal, so it's not just us oldies not getting it.

Nor me @rookiemere - but was wondering if I am just old and boring! There must be a market for these rooms and I feel like my 80yr DM sometimes with my reaction to some "innovations" in modern life Grin

@StevieNicksscarf I can't remember ever wanting to see DH on the loo, even in the early heady days of our relationship.

You're not alone OP - I booked a hotel for a couple of nights in Palma and thought that I had found a lovely hotel for a reasonable price on Booking.com. The reviews were good and was on verge of booking but decided to read through reviews properly and saw many people who had booked family room were saying that there was no door on the bathroom. Shock

Can imagine my two teenage DDs being overjoyed at having to shower and use the loo on front of me and their dad. Have to admit that after best part of 30 yrs together the days of DP and I bathing together are long gone, and the thought of watching him on the loo is not something that appeals (who said romance doesn't last eh?) Actually @WhatsitWiggle I've started re looking at Dreams Lanzarote again. I'd discounted it due to some reason I now don't remember, would you recommend it ?

I wouldn't even like to sleep in a room like this. Just disconcerting.

It does seem to be a 'thing' in a certain type of design conscious hotel.

Alas, for me it has strong associations with dodgy norf Landan letting agents who try to palm off a half arsed bathroom with a futon in the corner as a cleverly designed space saving bedsit.

I mean come on, all these places are missing is Superhans's sleeping bag.

Barcelona is notorious for bathrooms like this. The super expensive W the B hotel and plenty of others have these grim set up’s.

I double check always as I’m very private on the loo. I always have a balcony too so I can send them out.

I couldn't spend one night in a hotel room like that . I have a bit of a bathroom phobia and I couldn't sleep in a room where the bath and toilet were part of the bedroom . Thank goodness I don't stay in five star hotels.

Thanks @WhatsitWiggle looking at the Sheraton Caleta - apparently the rooms need redecorating so unlikely to have public view toilets.

@Clymene we could hardly believe our eyes when we saw the room layout and dd was convinced we had been placed in a room under construction. The hotel is lovely, but open plan bathrooms are utterly bizarre.

@rookiemere what about Dreams Lanzarote, that's got proper bathrooms! Or Princesa Yaiza.

I've seen quite a few with a glass window between the bedroom and bathroom, but always with a blind you can move down for privacy. Totally open plan like the Tacande is just plain weird, especially as they weren't like that originally so they've gone to the effort of knocking out walls during the refurb.

I went to Dom rep with family for a wedding. The decision was almost made for me to take a family room with my parents but I insisted on paying for my own room cos I can't stand my dad's snoring. Thank god!!! The shower cubicle looked onto the bedroom with frosted glass and of course whilst you can't see detail you can see enough!! Can you imagine showering with your dad in the room, having to ask him to turn away. Would of made the whole trip a horrible experience.

Also in some restaurants in Prague, I've walked into toilets with frosted glass, again not in detail but you can tell a woman is sitting down, pants around her legs, getting up, clearing wiping motion. Eugh why!!!

@bevelino

I stayed at Hotel Hospes Madrid and the bathroom and toilet are open plan such that you are completely on show when in use. I was fortunate that I was travelling with dd but we saw other people in reception enquiring about rooms with a separate bathroom.

WHY????
