Oslo / Bergen

I'm hoping to book a short break in Oslo and was considering taking the train to Bergen. However it takes about 7 hours so would be two full days out of the break.

Is it worth going to Bergen?

How long are you going for? I did 3 days in Oslo and there was plenty to do. I would like to go to Bergen though so interested in replies. And to do the Flam railway.

These describe the best options. However you need an overnight somewhere! If it’s a short stay in Oslo it’s not worth it. If you have longer, add it in. Or organise a holiday around Bergen.

Bergen is lovely indeed, but if you're only in Norway for a short break you'd be spending a lot of that on the train. The Bergenbana (sp?) /Flamsbana is indeed lovely, but you'd spend a lot of time looking out of the window.

Is there any option of booking a flight back from Bergen instead of Oslo? That makes the logistics easier. We were in Norway last summer and did a few days in Oslo first, then half the Bergenbana and then the Flamsbana down to the fjords, a week there then we got the express boat through the fjord straight to Bergen and flew back from there a few days later.
It would be entirely possible to condense that down to two days Oslo, a day or two travelling in the fjords and a day in Bergen.
BTW with Bergen: we travelled in late August and found it frustrating that so many sights and museums there were closed, partly because of C19 and partly because it was outside the Bergen school holidays. Walking round the wooden houses was lovely though.

BTW the Flamsbana loves to call itself the most beautiful train route in the world, but I've been on more scenic routes that don't blow their own trumpet so much - and the 'big surprise' of the journey is utterly cringeworthy, but I won't spoil it here.

We did the train to Bergen and flew back. Was very relaxing and we preferred Bergen to Oslo

Thanks everyone. Can't get a direct flight back from Bergen unfortunately. Length of stay kind of depends if we are going to do this but it's two days on a train and the kids might not be happy.

I'd love to get a cabin on the water for a few days. Is that possible near to Oslo?
