I keep looking at websites around this area and it sounds fab, but just wondered if anyone had actally been and loved it/hated it.

my mum had an apartment there - and now lives a few miles inland.

It is a Spanish peoples holiday resort - although quite a few ex-pats there now.

When are you thinking of going?? How old dc's

Thinking of going in August, probably end of. Have two girls who will be 7 then.

It is very very busy in August - as all locals on holidays for the entire month. And can get very hot.
the beach is good as has play areas dotted along it, also have volleyballs nets and pedalo hire.
The port end is more refined - a better class of restaurant but has a pebble beach while the Arenal end has a lovely beach but much busier.
Terramitica (theme park) and Aqualandia waterpark)are great days out about half hour drive.

Thanks for that. Looking at the websites, i've been trying to judge the distance between port based apartments and arenal beach - is it within walking distance, how long approx?

Yes it's about a 15minute walk in holiday mode.

at the Arenal end they have a night market along the seafront - I think it's every night in August.
There is quite a bit of building work going on so I'd check before you book.
