Beach Holiday in Europe in August without really hot weather

applestamper · 18/01/2022 10:56

Hi,

Can anyone recommend somewhere to go in Europe (not UK) in August for a beach holiday with temperatures at about 25 degrees maximum? We are two adults and two children ages 7 and 4.
We were hoping to go to Lanzarote or Tenerife at Easter but it looks like that won't happen now so I need to find somewhere for August

I would say Ile de Re or the beaches around Royan. Chatellaion Plage is a nice relaxed seaside town (I’ve probably spelled it wrong).

You might get a heatwave but no more likely than in the UK. Equally you can get rain. Generally the weather there is similar to whatever the UK is getting at the time, but a little warmer and sunnier.

@QuizzicalEyebrows

Ils de Ré on the West coast of France will suit your needs
Ile de Re gets very hot. It's just broken up by the storms sometimes.

@Franklin12

What about the Italian Lakes? Northern Italian and the kids will love the ice cream. There is nothing like it in the world. We went to Riva and it had a young vibe and a beach on the lake.
I live in northern Italy and it get extremely hot in august!
Headunderthecovers · 18/01/2022 14:11

Asturias in Nothern Spain has lovely beaches, but wasn't hot as mountains behind.

applestamper · 18/01/2022 20:41

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, lots of options to research, and I love researching holidays!

Definitely look at the Channel Islands. It can get hot (like anywhere) but my happiest childhood times were spent cycling around on Sark. It's lovely.

Lisbon-Porto coast in Portugal is mid-20s in the summer. The only downside considering your DC ages is that it's the Atlantic and v popular with surfers due to waves. That said, some places are definitely less surfy than others - CasCais & Costa Caparica are both good beaches with little ones and actually CasCais is very sheltered. There are plenty of places to stay along that coast where you could hire a villa/hotel/apartment & pool so you could have the benefits of the bearable temps with DC being in a more contained area to splash about. I wouldn't venture too far inland though. My sister lives in central Portugal and it's regularly 35-40 degrees in the summer months!

Alternatively, if France appeals, how about the L'Aquitaine region? I haven't been there in years but from memory Biarritz and St Jean de Luz were both great. Sandy beaches and very breezy. Definitely not too hot! If you like lake holidays, Evian is stunning, as is the whole of the Lake Geneva area. You can swim in the lake or there are several large outdoor swimming pools. On the French side, Evian & Thonon are really lovely. Lake Annecy is also accessible within an hour by car. On the Swiss side, Bouveret, Chillon, Montreaux and Lausanne are all good places to visit. Fly to Geneva and then it's just over an hour to drive to Evian. You can also take the boat across the lake from Evian to Lausanne.

Franklin12 · 20/01/2022 17:39

I honestly dont remember them being baking hot

www.audleytravel.com/ca/italy/italian-lakes/best-time-to-visit#nov-feb

This is from Audley Travel and I would agree those were the typical temperatures.

We went twice once at the end of August and once mid July just because I dont like to boiling!

Franklin12 · 20/01/2022 17:40

But I agree. Sometimes you can get that one week where temps either cave in or become very hot. Just like the UK....

countrygirl99 · 20/01/2022 18:00

Aero in Denmark is lovely

countrygirl99 · 20/01/2022 18:02

Even Finland had a long very hot spell last year so nothing is guaranteed but generally Northern France/Belgium/Holland she good bets.

HolidayMiracle · 20/01/2022 18:09

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Madeira - I've been planning a trip since before Covid because it seems like it's 20-25 degrees most of the year and definitely in August which is perfect for my kids too.

LadyEloise1 · 20/01/2022 19:51

Jersey can be hit and miss weather wise.
One year we had lovely weather so we went the following year but it rained. 🙁
Like you @applestamper we are Irish and get enough rain at home.
Watching with interest though as 20-25 degrees would be lovely.

applestamper · 20/01/2022 20:03

Ooh lots more lovely ideas, thanks everyone!

What was Jersey like @LadyEloise1? I have it in mind for a short trip for DH and I next year, hopefully leaving DC at home.

MrsWeatherwax · 20/01/2022 20:11

I have a DH that becomes non-functional in humidity and temperatures in 28+ region. Our most enjoyable August holidays have been along the Atlantic coastlines of Europe through France, Spain and Portugal.

Temperatures more around the 25 mark, lower humidity and a good ocean breeze.

Have a look at Biarritz, Archachon, St Sebastian, Estoril and Cascais.

LadyEloise1 · 21/01/2022 07:51

I loved Jersey, the children were little - it was some time ago.
We stayed in Gorey.
St. Brelades Bay area was lovely too.
Perhaps someone who has been there more recently will have more up to date information for you.
I do want to go back. Happy memories.

We stayed in the Vendee years ago too but I personally would have liked it warmer and sunnier. We probably just hit a bad year weather wise.
Thank you @MrsWeatherwax, some great suggestions in your post.

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 21/01/2022 07:57

Brittany, St Malo is wonderful or there is a really lovely resort called St Lunaire.
Sweden - though expensive.

Branleuse · 21/01/2022 07:59

Brittany.

gogohm · 21/01/2022 08:04

Northern france, Baltic coast, Ireland? They all however are like Britain in that temperatures are unpredictable and rain too. Once you get to more guaranteed sun the temperatures are likely to be higher.

gogohm · 21/01/2022 08:07

I would suggest taking the ferry to Brittany and going south of the Loire to get the most likely favourable outcome, I've stayed at la tranche sur mer in the past in the vendee

LadyEloise1 · 15/07/2023 16:39

Italy is boiling at the moment apparently. 😮

Mushroo · 15/07/2023 16:42

Word of warning for Aquitaine region, we were in Bordeaux / Arcachon last year and it was over 40 degrees.

It was a freak heatwave but most of the forests were on fire…

It really is! 16 areas under severe heat alert. We are in Tuscany at the moment and people are changing their plans to avoid being out in the big cities like Florence during the midday heat.

We are in The Italian Lakes and it’s around 28-30.
Manageable with a swimming pool/lake and air con
