Cala D'Or

I would love some opinions on Cala D'Or. I'm looking to book our first family holiday abroad, will have a 6yo and 3yo.

I know various people who went 5+ years ago and say how lovely it is which is why we were considering it. Whilst looking at hotels lots say enjoy the lively nightlife and party the night away!!! Completely not what we're after but don't know if the resort has changed or just the way it is marketed to draw more people in. Any thoughts?

We're looking for somewhere with good beaches and pools, marina, small town for pottering, some restaurants.

@Mamaemmeline hi op if you are looking for more family focussed alcudia is a little further away but it's lovely and quiet there beautiful beach and you don't really get a night life scene there .

Tittyfilarious81 · 10/01/2022 16:39

@Mamaemmeline also alcudia has everything you are looking for the old town is beautiful

IGotHam · 10/01/2022 16:43

It's very brits abroad. There are nice bits and the beaches are beautiful but lots of it is naff karaoke bars and you struggle to get any proper Spanish food. I went last summer and I wouldn't go back tbh.

IGotHam · 10/01/2022 16:45

If you want something a little more upmarket have a look at Mahon in Menorca, beautiful place. Menorca has great beaches too.

That is exactly what cala d'Or is. It's not a nightlife place although I'm sure there's probably a couple of clubs but it's definitely a great place to take kids.
The 'calas' are just stunning, crystal clear water and very safe for children. There's outdoor soft play type parks for the evenings with loads to do and a bar for parents! The marina has some amazing restaraunts, but there's also loads in the main shopping area.
I've been several times with ds and can't wait to go back!

Sorry reported my post as its about the wrong place! I had a brain fart or something!

Cala dor - the beaches are so packed. A bit claustrophobic.

Tillymintpolo · 10/01/2022 16:58

We love Cala dor, gorgeous beaches and there’s a little train that goes to the marina, it’s definitely a family resort.

belimoo · 10/01/2022 16:59

I used to go there every year as a kid and absolutely loved it!

We used to stay in the Cala Fererra area which is a little way away from the centre and has gorgeous beaches and is very child friendly.

There is nightlife in the centre but it's interspersed with family restaurants and shops etc. It was a million miles away from the Magaluf party scene in terms of atmosphere when I was there (I think there were 2 nightclubs in the centre in total).

Starlitexpress · 10/01/2022 16:59

I went a few years ago and I didn't see any nightlife! Definitely geared towards families with lovely beaches and crystal clear water and food was very unadventurous.

Kattya · 10/01/2022 17:00

Try just next door Cala egos. It’s lovely.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 10/01/2022 17:00

Ah see, we like Cala D’or a lot but we have teens. I like the fact it’s compact, we don’t need a car. The marina with restaurants has a different vibe from the town. Beaches are small there though if that’s your thing (I prefer pool)
Certainly not a party town (no nightclubs) just busy. What do you look for in a holiday?

Qthemusic · 10/01/2022 17:23

They can be in the middle of the day. We tend go early and have the beach to ourselves or in the evening.

Campervan69 · 10/01/2022 17:28

Depends when you go tbh. Mid August the beaches are packed all over the Balearics. Low point for us was the sea being roped off at Cala Egos for water pollution and the beach actually closed by the police.

I love going there out of season. Was there October half term. Fabulous beaches when not crowded.

cloudtree · 10/01/2022 17:29

We used to go a lot to Cala egos which is just down the coast and walk every evening along the coast road through the marina and into Cala d’or. I have fond memories but they are 30+ years old so not very helpful!

worriedatthemoment · 10/01/2022 17:33

I went to cala dor about 3 years ago and loved it , nightlife wAs not a lot of
One karaoke bar that was late late and thats all we found
The beaches of which plenty were lovely and so was the marina , we stayed about 10/15 min walk to the main centre where there are a huge amount restaurants but by our hotel there was a road that also had some shops/ restaurants
Our resort was great with lots of pools and mostly all families
I never see many young groups mostly families but we went in june ?
The little train to the marina stopped right by our hotel as well which was nice
Its a good distance from the airport though would be my only negative

ShirleyBadass · 10/01/2022 17:39

We went there in October a couple of years ago so was quite quiet. Really lovely place though and wouldn't hesitate to go back either with or without DC.

Mamaemmeline · 10/01/2022 17:53

These comments are really helpful. Thank you. It sounds like it would be good for us as I was worried it was turning into a clubbing town. Glad it is not.

Any hotel recommendations?

Also debating 7 or 10 nights?

Isn't Puerta Pollensa very popular with families who have youngish children ?

FruitToast · 10/01/2022 18:07

We prefer Pollensa or Puerto Pollensa in the north (next town up from Alcudia). Tend to get a villa/apartment in Pollensa town and go to the port/beach in the late afternoon and evening though. The Majorcan coast is very catered to British and German tourists! The north and west of the island tend to be quieter than the south and east coasts if you're happy to hire a car.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 10/01/2022 18:14

We loved Cala d’or playa aparthotel. The rooms were immaculate, the little splash park was great for kids. I couldn’t fault it.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/01/2022 18:14

We loved Cala D’or when our children were little. We used to stay at the Cala D’or Playa however we’ve not been there for many years so I can’t vouch for it now.

In your shoes, however, I’d be steering clear of Mallorca and going to Menorca. You can’t go wrong there. There’s no rowdy resorts, all the beaches are safe and incredibly clean. It’s a very short flight, the airport is easy to navigate and the island is tiny so no long transfers. Most flights are in the day time too, which isn’t true of Mallorca.

I absolutely love it out there. I’d move there tomorrow.

worriedatthemoment · 10/01/2022 18:49

We stayed in an resort type one had two appartmwnt type hotels and then a third posher one and you could use facilities
We had double room and then two sofa which were beds in living area and small table / chairs fridge etc
The posher hotel i think was Esmerelda and we stayed in interotel cala azur part but used the interol cala azur gardens pool as was nicer .
I think that were the names , we had booked to go back but then covid happened

ShirleyBadass · 11/01/2022 17:08

[quote Campervan69]We stayed here. We had a ground floor one bed apartment with a little garden it was very nice and reasonably priced.

This is where we stayed too! Really liked it - clean and well placed.
