Canaries in January - anyone got a crystal ball?!

This isn’t a Covid one, but weather!
We’ve had to cancel a trip and have a voucher.....I hate January in the uk and have stacks of annual leave. Would I be mad to go to the Canaries in January ? Would we be able to sit in shorts and t shirts, or swim in the pool? Thank you in advance. (And happy 2022!)

You would be mad!

We are going February half term. I've been assured that the weather will be fine.

I'm actually in the algarve right now. We've had some beautiful sunny days. Temperatures in low 20s. Love coming away at this time of year, We've been able to explore lots more than you can in the height of summer.

Youvegotafriendinme · 30/12/2021 23:38

We went to Lanzarote 30th December to 4th January a couple of years ago and mornings and evenings would be cold enough that you needed a cardigan on and jeans but during the day we were comfortable in jeans and a tshirt. We couldn’t use our hotel pool as it wasn’t heated (they said it was and it was either not hot enough or it was broken) and it was freezing. Had a average high temp of 20 if I remember correctly

MayCup · 30/12/2021 23:47

I'm here now, (GC), the northern part.
Days are warm and sunny, not needed any of the coats or jackets in the evening, it's very pleasant.

MayCup · 30/12/2021 23:49

Not been in the pool or sea, but there are so many people swimming daily in las canteras.
I've been in my bikini since the 18th!

Look on Accuweather to see what the temperature was like in Jan 21.

That’s lovely, thank you all. And happy 2022!

I wouldn’t risk it
Not a chance
I want guarantees sun and heat
Hence very hot destination in June!

MercedesBenz · 31/12/2021 11:54

It is currently 30 degrees in southern Gran Canaria
Sunny enough in the day for pool and sunbathing but not roasting
Evenings tho you will need sweatshirt / jeans light puffa
Not strappy dresses

shinynewapple21 · 31/12/2021 21:46

Not as far south as canaries but have had several Holidays in southern Spain in December/ January and it's definitely T shirt weather in day time, but sweater / jacket needed in evening as can be quite cold . I think canaries is meant to be warmer but chance of being windy or cloudy .

If you get there OP, can you come back and update us on any Covid restrictions- both for travel and when you are there . From what I've just read they seem to currently have an outdoor face masks rule - although I don't know if this applies to canaries .

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 31/12/2021 21:49

You must wear a face mask outdoors everywhere in Spain at the moment (and indoors).

GreenClock · 05/01/2022 20:16

My neighbour has just come back from visiting a friend in GC for NYE with a lovely tan! She said they needed cardigans/hoodies in the evening but the days were spent in swimwear/shorts by the pool, reading.

OverByYer · 05/01/2022 20:20

I've just booked to go beginning February to Tenerife, so am hoping it will be good.

userxx · 05/01/2022 20:25

It will be 99% better than here so just do it.

lljkk · 05/01/2022 20:26

I am jealous. Any room in your suitcase to stow me?

Campervan69 · 05/01/2022 20:57

It's incredibly cheap atm. Got February half term all inclusive for family of 4 with flights in 3 bed villa for £1500. Cant wait especially now they've dropped the testing requirements for coming home.

Orchid876 · 05/01/2022 21:00

Very true @userxx! We went to Lanzarote in mid-Feb a few years ago and it was lovely.

Sausagis · 05/01/2022 21:05

I went to Tenerife 1st January 2019. Warm enough for tshirt shorts in day, add a jacket in the evening. Lovely sunshine. It was windy (but warm wind). Water was COLD. Too cold for me. Kids managed short swims at hotel and water park out of sheer determination. I would go back in a heart beat, so nice to have warmth and sun that time of year.

GrannieD · 05/01/2022 21:19

I'm going on Saturday to Lanzarote so have been on weather watch for a few weeks! Temps are mid 20s in the daytime till sun goes down at 6.00. Boris has made it easier following his announcement today so go for it !

Catch32 · 05/01/2022 21:21

Go to southern Gran Canaria (I.e. Maspalomas/Meloneras), it's your best bet. I've been a couple of times in Jan and the weather was a lovely 24/25 degrees during the day. If it clouded over for a couple of hours, you might get a bit cool in your bikini when sunbathing, but generally it felt simular to an end of summer season holiday in Spain/Portugal- would 100% recommend it for the winter blues.

Lysianthus · 05/01/2022 23:47

Update! Thanks to the announcement, I’ve booked and we’re going to Madeira last week Jan. I decided that if the weather wasn’t brilliant, there’d be some interesting sightseeing/shopping.... I have also booked 2 checked bags so I’ll have room for @lljkk 😁

I live in Spain. We have lots of tourists from the UK (and elsewhere ). Don't worry. The canaries are definitely shirts weather in January but you may need layers for night
